I'm kind of surprised at the bahsing the new 5 is taking... I actually like it, except for 2 things:

1) Like I mentioned earlier... if you squint your eyes and look quickly at the front end, it looks a bit like a 97-03 Grand Prix... kind of like GTO does...

2) I'm not wild about the WRX-ish taillamps...

Other than that, I think it looks pretty nice for a sports sedan.

Hmm Darth, are we actually going to disagree here?

Yes.

Honestly besides the trademark BMW grill I see very little in the design that says "BMW". I stand by my statement that it looks much more Toyota than anything else.

Does the interior scream CTS to anyone else?

Over all the car is OK though. All BMWs look the same / boring to me, except the Z3 and Z4 which I dont really care about the styling of. This one just has some funky lights...

High Res Pics

You need to check out the High res pics available via hyperlink at the beginning of the page. Once you look at those I think you can better tell it is a beemer. Look at the angle of the hood to the grill, it is just like the old Z3. The rear end is very BMW, I am not sure I see the Camry, Grand Prix or WRX at all in this car. I think it is going to be one smooth ride. Although I would never buy a BMW at least not new because of price. I am excited about the new GTO and the Saab 9-3 Vector or even better the Saab 9-3 Aero when that comes out!!!

I fear that this high-beltline, big, solid, square and vault-like trend will extend to my beloved 3-series.

Furthers my belief that BMW has the best designs going as a company. I'm betting that they toned down this design after the way the 7 series was received. The tail lamps do resemble that of a WRX's though. Different enough to not be mistaken however. I see more Z4/7 series than anything else. I'm betting this car will be a homerun just like the last 5 series was.

Yes.

heheh! Hey - It was bound to happen sometime, right??

Actually, it's not like I am drooling over this car... I just don't think it is as bad as a lot of others seemingly do...

Fair enough. I have just come to expect more from BMW I guess. I really like the current design, it is quite beautiful in its simplicity. Now they want to carve strange lines out of the doors and design more agressive tail lights that come off looking like something from a car 1/3 of its price....
