Odd looking Commodore pics

The pics are at the beginning of this thread.

Now my thoughts. As you can see the front fenders look like they are flared so an AWD drivetrain is a possiblity. The dual dual pipes (a la GTO) show that the fuel tank has disappeared from its normal location. And to top it all off it is a LHD 4 door. Interesting combo!

Soooo...... my thoughts.
  1. It might be just a LHD AWD test bed. But that doesn't explain why the dual dual exhaust and relocation of the fuel tank. And Holden haven't even released an RHD AWD 4 door yet, even tho it has been rumoured that Holden will release an AWD SS Commodore for a while now. I doubt an AWD 4 door will appear on the current chassis as it would only have 13-14 months of life left. The exhaust suggests a V8 is under the hood.
  2. Second theory. Maybe this is the first pics of Zeta? It is known Holden have Commodores running around with the Zeta (VE Commodore) running gear and a VY shell. This would explain the slight awkward look of this car. VE also has the fuel tank under the rear seat explaining why it is missing from the rear and the exhaust is how it is. But LHD? maybe they are just testing a LHD Zeta?

Thoughts?

I don't know if it's just an illusion, but the front track looks wider than the rear track.

If that is Zeta/VE, and Zeta is brought here, I hope that they leave the Civic tail lights in Oz.

My first thought too. Fits the development time frame too.

Since they have been experimenting with ls1 powered awd for years and the fact they already make lhd commodores to send to the middle east labeled as chevrolet impalas or whatever... doesn't surprise me to much? oh well

Its the lights on the old VY model shell. (Current model V-CAR is VZ).

Further down that thread on www.ls1.com.au someone confirms it as a test mule.

Engine stress testing, perhaps.

They often have weighted trailers attached to test drivetrain and suspension components. Seen a few out in the dessert areas of SoCal, Nevada, & Arizona over the years when I lived down there.

Re: Odd looking Commodore pics

they said it was rwd, and looks awd and awkward cause the driveline doesn't fit well on the body. makes me wonder what chassis is under it.

Re: Odd looking Commodore pics

Companies often do retro fit a current body onto a new architecture, which I am certain Holden did in this case as to not cause any unnecessary attention to themselves.

Lets not forget something here folks and that is Holden does not sell many vehicles per year when compared to other markets. They certainly would not want, or need to put a car in full camo for powertrain, architecture, etc testing.

The sad thing is, I said it was Zeta (and made my post before) even checking out the pictures. The description was all I needed to know it was Zeta. So, who else put up their house note compared to mine
