Now that we know CAMARO is making a return. Firebird?
Now that we know CAMARO is making a return. Firebird?
I know! I know! Many people have said the Firebid is dead
. I was just wondering since all the little tid bids are coming out all over the place about the return of the Camaro, is the Firebid still dead? We can debate for years on market, sales, niche, but just wondering has anyone heard any "talk" of a Pontiac stable mate. I don't want to have to buy a Camaro after owning 5 Firebirds

If you want a firebird, buy a Camaro and maybe the Firebird will return some day. I think if the Camaro returns and does well enough, it may happen..

I can't see Firebird ever coming back. Camaro had a lot vested in the name, but Firebird is just not that recognizable. You can disagree all you like with that, but it's a fact.

After owning 18 forth generation V8 firebirds, mostly Trans Ams, I have leased a GTO. Its like making love to a woman who has passed out- there's just something missing.

The Firebird is GONE, pick up a GTO next.
GTO is no firebird. Even though it was my favorite of the two f-bods and i could live with it gone, the GTO is far from a proper replacement if that's what some of you are getting at.

Nobody really recoginzed the Firebird or Trans Am name.
When you say you've got a Trans Am, the first thing that will pop into a lot of people's minds is a 1977 Black with huge gold chicken T/A with Burt Reynolds driving like a madman.

If Pontiac is supposed to have sporty models, it makes sense for them to have a sporty V8 coupe. However, if it's a duplicate of the Chevy, except for a power antenna, then maybe it's not a good idea.
There are probably very few people who would buy a Firebird, but not buy a nearly identical Camaro.

Man
I guess I am going to have to keep my nest egg another year yet to see what the Camaro looks like.
I don't know...something about that comment doesn't sit right with me

Unlike Camaro, it's been said by both Bob Lutz and Pontiac general manager Lynn Myers that Firebird is done, and I haven't heard any softening of that position yet. Pontiac is moving to upscale performance, and Firebird isn't the image that Pontiac's trying to project. GM even canned those "Have a Pontiac for 24 hours" commercials because it gave off the wrong image. This is also the reason Pontiac left NASCAR in favor of avenues that actually display Pontiac's performance.
Also worth noting is that Firebirds ([b][color=red]except for it's heyday in the mid to late 70s) have always been the favored child despite Camaros being the ones that actually sell. Count the number of changes and different noses, hoods, tail lights and bumpers between the 3rd and 4th gen Camaros and Firebirds. Camaro did all the sales. Firebird got all the benefits.
Though I'd put a new Firebird's chances at 90% against, especially with GM now eliminating product overlap, it's still worth noting that the original Firebird came along after the Camaro was done, and had nothing more than a nose and tail light difference, so anythings possible.
Then again, so is a 747 crashlanding in front of your house.
