NEW YORK — Automakers Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. are interested in purchasing a significant stake in General Motors Corp. (GM) and including the struggling Detroit company in their alliance, according to a letter sent Friday to GM from billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian's investment company.
Shares of GM increased $1.20, or 4.4 percent, to $28.64 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange after the news.

The letter from Kerkorian's investment company, Tracinda Corp., said the company believes Renault and Nissan are receptive to the idea of including General Motors in their partnership and purchasing "a significant minority interest" in the Detroit automaker.
Tracinda, a large minority shareholder in GM, said the existing French-Japanese partnership has created "tremendous engineering, manufacturing and marketing synergies, resulting in substantial benefits and cost savings to both Renault and Nissan."
Tracinda urged GM's board to form a committee to "immediately and fully explore this opportunity together with management," as it feels the alliance could help GM "realize substantial synergies and cost savings and thereby greatly benefit the company and enhance shareholder value."
GM, in a statement, said the Tracinda request "will be taken under advisement" by its board of directors. The automaker said it has not received any offers or proposals from Renault/Nissan about an alliance. GM said it would have no further comment.

Tracinda owns 9.9 percent of GM's common stock and is GM's third-largest shareholder. Kerkorian has pressured GM to take aggressive steps to restore profitability and his top aide, Jerome York, was elected to GM's board earlier this year.
The letter also indicates that Tracinda has reached out to Renault Chairman Louis Schweitzer and Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn to alert them to its contact with General Motors.
In a separate letter advising Schweitzer and Ghosn of the GM correspondence, Tracinda noted that "as we recently discussed with Mr. Ghosn, Tracinda believes that General Motors, Renault and Nissan should explore a three-company, partnership-based alliance."
Officials with Renault and Nissan declined comment.
Renault owns a 44.4 percent stake in Nissan, which in turn owns a 15 percent stake in Renault. Nissan was on the brink of bankruptcy when Ghosn was dispatched by Renault to lead the Japanese company in 1999. The Brazilian-born Ghosn engineered a cost-cutting and morale-boosting campaign that revived the automaker.

Why is it "bad news". GM could use the help. If anything, its bad news for Nissan. I'd hate to see GM take Nissan's quality to the sh*tter. Gm seems to make a really nice piece of crap.

Comparing Infiniti to Cadillac I think Infiniti still has the edge. But Nissan compared to Chevy, Buick, Pontiac, Saturn, and Saab? I'd sooner depend on the latter.
To be honest I would have been a lot more excited to see some sort of minor merger between GM and Honda or GM and Toyota.

sounds like a good thing to me. could broaden GM's horizons, and make them a bit financially stronger, which = better chance of 5th gen.

My car's fit and finish is in all ways superior to the Maxima that it directly competes with. GM's going to pull out of the ****ter on their own, whether or not they choose to accept this will determine how long it will take. I for one hope this won't happen, but it doesn't make financial sense.

Meh, I have mixed feelings but I don't think Nissan is that great of a company...like Threxx said, a joint collaboration between Toyota and GM would be nutso.

I am fully against this. What gains are their to be had anyway? Nissan makes like 18 models off of 3 platforms, with two engines. Not like there is anymore of a way to badge engineering that can be squeezed out of that rock. Furthermore, I can really see no gains in powertrain because GM Powertrain is quite simply on of the best in the world at that.
I also do not see how Nissan is more efficiant or makes higher quality cars than GM either. GM is about as efficiant as an automaker can be in all honesty. In the end, I see nothing out there for GM to learn from Nissan that is worth giving up 20% control. While GM does not just have cash laying around, I do not see $3 billion as worth the hassle of integrating two very different companies and having more people to answer to.
GM's biggest problem is legacy costs, and no merger will ever fix that...only a maybe government sponsored correction.
Kerkorian is an ***, and in the end is out to make back his investment. He did no good at DCX, and will do no good a GM. I am willing to bet that he knows GM's board will not approve this, but went public with it anyway to look like he knows something everyone doesn't know, and more importantly, make the stock have a nice quick jump.
