Well without him they wouldn't have had anything to lose.

Interesting though, it doesen't give any real reason for the loss other than "competion". I would think the all the new models coming out would have made their numbers better than that.

I guess the endless fields of used Altimas and G35s is cutting into their new model sales.

They still had a net profit of almost 600 million! Still better than Ford and Chrysler

While not a huge fan of nissan, I do really like the Titans and new Altimas.

Kinda adds some credibility to the theory that Ghosn was looking at the GM tie-up as a means to provide a diversion to Nissan's (impending) faltering performance. I can just imagine how that headline would have read if the alliance had went through: "GM Performance Puts Drag on Nissan's Results"

Well, GM gets positive review for "losing less money" in a given time compared to the previous year, so I woudnt hang them just because they "didnt make as much" than previously, lol.

That cuts both ways though -- any time there is a merger, a company has a free reign to lose billions in "restructuring write-offs", and the CEO gets to keep his job for 2 more years. You don't think GM wouldn't love to find a way to keep Wall Street off its *** for a couple more years?

I think the truth is GM passed on the Nissan deal only because the price wasn't right, not because the strategy was bad. If someone threw them a life preserver, they would grab it.

Let's not loose site of the fact that including the first quarter of 2007 (which is the last quarter of Nissan's fiscal year), Nissan MADE just under $4BILLION Net Income for the year and actually made the most gross revenue it has ever made.

Return on investment went from the highest in the industry the prior year (@ 10%) to approximately 7.4% for last year (I say approximately because I dont' have the press release in front of me).

In other words, Nissan is still selling vehicles and still making money; the results for 2006 and for the first quarter are disappointing compared to the goals but hardly worth crying over.

Still reasonable profit especially for its revenue. Given the Big 2 are waaaay bigger than Nissan and fail to turn a profit, the figures look even better in relative light.

I've never been a fan of Nissan. Nothing in their lineup has ever piqued my genuine interest - and I'm not referring to their awesome sports cars either - just that the competition always offers something better IMHO.

I think Nissan may be in for some tougher times down the road...it appears their creativity is losing a little steam. The new Altima doesn't look substantially different from the old one, the current Maxima has never been as popular as the older ones, the new Sentra is a complete dud, the Titan seems like a sales flop even in the import-loving Northeast, the Altima coupe will cannibalize the G35 coupe without a doubt...which leaves? Well, the Versa seems to sell well, but won't make them much money, and uh...the Armada? Right...same goes for the Pathfinder. Aside from the Xterra and Altima, I can't think of any good volume sellers Nissan has at this point that are overly popular. They don't have the reliability cache of a Honda or Toyota, so if the striking design isn't there, what have you got???
