The new ZO6...

Guys they talked about the new ZO6 in my Motor Trend magazine. The GEN IV small block will feature 3 valves per cylinder and will be between 6 and 6.3 Liters. It will easily capable of 7L. The ZO6 will get 500 horsepower at 7000rpm and a redline of 8000 rpm....who needs vtech? I just hope the car looks good and hits its target weight of less than 3100lbs. The vette will have its first real chance at dethrowning the viper since the ZR1. We'll see how it all works out.

Less than 3100 punds!
That would be awesome - but I really don't see why they can't get more horsepower...I mean, 500? Come on!

As has been discussed in the 5th Gen/ Future Vehicle Forum, don't believe everything you read in MT. Some of that stuff is close, some is way off.

But you are right about getting the Viper (although really, even the current Z06 is a better car than the Viper, by far - it's just not quite as fast in a straight line...).

500 horsepower is OK but I was hoping for more given the huge technological jumps they're making from the current motor to the next (the electromagnetically actuated valves, 3 valves per cylinder, and higher displacement).

I guess the real treat will be the power under the curve since the valve timing will be infinitely and instantly adjustable depending on the speed, RPM, and throttle position.

Um, don't hold your breath. I still want to know where this electomagnetic valve actuation stuff came from...

I like the vettes... but that 488 V-10 in the Vipers is still impressively UNDERWORKED at just 500hp. It should be interesting to see if the info about the C6 Z06 is correct. We've been hearing a LOT of crap info, even from GM people, about that car. Nothing is for sure until it hits the streets.

IMO, Vipers are becoming more Corvette-like and Corvettes are trying to become more Viper-like. Not the best idea for either car, but can't be too terrible for most consumers.

I always liked the unabashed over-the-top design of the Gen 2 (96-02) Vipers. C5s are great cars and good bang for the buck, but they just have too many gadgets and too much comfort. The C5 is a daily driver designed for the female executive who has made it to the top. Try finding one with a 6-speed! Its tough.

The new Vipers have given way to more creature comforts from what people say. Still, 500hp and 500tq is hard to argue with.

I'll be surprised if we see a solenoid-operated valvetrain in the upcoming Vettes.

There was (is?) talk of using the new Displacement-on-Demand system (shuts off valves/spark/fuel to 4 cylinders when cruising), but that isn't an electromagnetic system. It just electrically controls a plunger to turn the lifters "on" and "off," so to speak.

Yes, DoD is coming for the trucks (in '05, I believe, on limited applications at first). It was at one time planned for the Vette; maybe that is what is confusing people about solenoid actuated valves...

The C5 still goes, stops and handles much better than a limited production, solid lifter, homologation special 1969 Z/28; but, if this is a problem, that's why you buy a Z06...

Why wouldn't we see it in the vette? It is the hallmark of Chevy performance for the millenium. The LS1 debuted in the vette, made it to the f-body and there are at least 3 variations of it in the Chevy/GMC pickups. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there is a solenoid valvetrain in the vette.

I honestly hoped for more HP. But like others said, we'll just have to wait and see. The base model Vette is getting like 420 HP, so I figured the ZO6 would have quite a bit more than that. 500 is still A LOT though

My, how jaded people have become. Those of you who were "hoping" for more than a mere 500 hp, have you driven a current Z06? Under 3200 lbs + 405 hp = sick fast for a street car (remember, there is more to life than outright bragging rights at the 1/4 mile). I've driven one several times, and I've thrashed a C6 at the limit for a while. 500 hp is more than enough for the Z06 for now. Frankly, in our lawsuit crazy society ( ), I'm amazed (and quite glad) that companies can sell such powerful cars! Good Lord, it wasn't long ago that 300 hp Z28s were the best performance buy ever, and being over 300 hp was elite territory (with 400 visited by a very few - megabuck exotics and cars like Viper/ZR1/Z06).

500 hp is a lot of frickin' horsepower for a street car. Know what? Even after driving these cars, my Camaro is still fun to me. Would I like to have 450 to 500 fwhp? Sure, and I debate often about making my B4C into a mild project car , or starting out with a C5 and working from there. I think the latest scheme (they change daily, much of it contingent on me getting a damn house) is to play with the B4C to get ~400-ish fwhp, and get a newer, faster bike if I want a sick power to weight ratio!

Like I said, 500 HP is A LOT, and more than enough. I just figured GM would out do the base model with more HP. I thought maybe 100 more HP. It seems there making the ZO6 into more of a super car these days, which is very cool.

What is wrong with some of you people? 400hp base isn't enough? 500hp Z0* isn't enough?? What kind of hp increase did you expect for virtually no price increase?? Jeezus, some people are never happy...

I think some people have just been hanging out with the import tuner crowd too much.
