Is a discount that unheard of? I mean there aren't many cars on the market today that I couldn't buy for invoice price including almost any full size truck on the market.
It's not like it's a manufacturer rebate - just a dealer discount, and at that it may only be one of those "valid on stock number XYZ123" -bait and switch type thing.

Lots of people seem to be glossing over the fact that these rebates are only on the basic work truck model. Doesn't really seem like there is much to get excited about here yet.
If it spreads to the rest of the Tundra lineup, then OK, that's something.

I was at the auto show today, in KC, and got to compare the Chevy, GMC, Dodge, Toyota pickups. Mine and my friends biggest gripe about the Tundra is the poorly laid out controls for the radio/HVAC and the feel of the materials. The GM trucks had a much better feel to them and had better layout and feel of the radio/HVAC controls. If the Toyota is going to take sales away from anyone, it would have to be the Dodge. You could tell that it was the oldest out of the bunch, but that should change soon. I did get to sit in the new Camary and the feel of the materials was way better than in the Tundra. I still liked the Aura and Milian over the Camary from sitting behind the wheel.
I am sort of a Toyota/Lexus nuthugger and I think the new Camry is a terd. Selling off of reputation only.
The new Tundra did skimp big time on the interior and as mentioned the interior design is wierd and annoying. I did not get a chance to see the GM trucks yet.
I never thought I would see the day when GM had the sweet interior, and Toyota had more power concerning trucks.

Keep in mind that Chevy is also offering some discounts on the new Silverado in some areas.
Still, word is the Tundra is not selling as briskly as the Toyota brass figured. They will soon have capacity to build 300,000 copies a year between their Texas and Indiana plants. They may have moved too quickly to create that kind of capacity. The next few months will be extremly telling for that truck....this is the most hyped launch of a foreign truck I can ever remember, and the fact that it seems to be stumbling coming out of the gate is not a great sign for them. You'd think that at least the Toyota faithful would be gobbling them up initially.

I'm kind of hoping it does so we can trim some fat in this truck market. It will also push technology like DoD and direct injection into more trucks and maybe we can get V6 Diesels here sooner. With flat truck sales automakers will put more resources in to cars. I'm hoping RWD mid-large cars are the next big thing.
Everyone talks about diesels but I keep thinking of a specific example of it being offered and somewhat flopping. Didn't Jeep offer a CRD Diesel in the Liberty very recently? It did not sell well (I think it was an expensive option on only top trim) and I am not sure if it is still offered. Does the general public, (not enthusiasts/magazines who promote it but still would not really buy personally if available), want diesel engines? Or is it simply that the general public is still unaware how good modern diesels really are?
I constantly read auto mag writers gush about diesels, yet not one of them drives a diesel car. If they are so great, why dont they have a VW Jetta TDi as a daily driver?

Keep in mind that there are very few diesel passenger car offerings in the US, and the recently discontinued VW TDI hardly represents the best of modern diesel technology. But between the Detroit 3, there are some 500K+ diesel pickups sold each year (70% of Ford and Dodge HD trucks are oil-burners), and so it's not like there's an awareness problem with the general public - the public buys diesels when they're offered.
