I don't agree with your #1. How do you figure it will be worth less? Rebates are taxed (at least in WI and MI) making the car costly more than a car without rebate but a lower MSRP, you're getting more equipment for the same or less money, and you don't have to wait for "the deal". Plus, GM's average percentage for resale is as good as anything out there for the most part, but rebates make this seem like such a loss.
Point in hand: if you buy a car that MSRP's for $20k, and you buy it for $15k, and trade it in a couple years for $10k, you lost $5k, not $10k as the resale scale is based on.
As is goes for being upside down, rebates do eat up the equity situation, but as for GM, the rebate game needs to end for Detroit's survival.

If before the total value pricing it cost $35,000, then after a year it would be worth $24,500. If that car is now $30,000 with total value pricing, then that same car minus the 30% depiciation is now worth only $21,000.
Depriciation rates are pegged at MSRP it seems...and given the anti-GM setiment in the world plus the fact GM cars are known for depriciating rapidly... I see it being a few years if ever before they actually adjust the depriation rates to reflect the lower MSRPs.

Seriously though, we have a used Escape on the lot. I actually drove it back to back. This thing is faster. But that isn't saying much
Z28x,
Were they both AWD models?

I will say though, as the Tribby has gotten more miles on it, and has loosened up............ it has gotten significantly quicker than new. I currently have 35K miles on it.
The biggest thing that hurts the acceleration in the Escape/Tribute, is the 4-speed automatic.............. which is also the only thing I really don't care for in my Tribute. It is just plain sluggish, all around. Slow to shift, slow to downshift. It certainly does its job, but its nothing to write home about. However, considering that most of my driving is highway.............. and twisty highway at that............... its the handling that keeps me grinning.
