New Small Buick (Verano) Officially Revealed

Surprised I haven't seen a thread about it today.

Looks pretty sharp, actually. I'm a little disappointed that the 2.4L hasn't been bumped up to a few more hp. It will drive fine with the current version, but it would be nice to see a few extra ponies and a few extra mpg, since Hyundai is claiming 200 hp and better mileage from their SIDI 2.4L.

Nice looking car but that engine...I'm with you on it being a bit on the weak side. I would have guessed it would have had that turbo'd four with a little more power output that is in the Cruze.

Exterior stylign looks nice, but I can barely tell the Lacrosse, Regal, and now this apart without really looking at them.

The interior looks really nice. I like that color combo.

I think most everyone is going to be in agreement on this one...nice looking car (inside and out surprisingly) but the MPG's need to be WAY higher.

Small cars = Big MPG's

If they don't then it will be considered a failure and will be ragged on in every publication.

Looks nice but Verano is not a good name. Reminds too much of Murano, the Nissan rollerskate.

Is the Regal not small enough? Regardless, I really like the look of this car. If I were shopping for cars in this class, I would rather have this than the Cruze.

Not quite. The Verano gets the 2.4L with 177-ish hp. The Cruze gets a 1.8L NA engine with 138 hp, or a 1.4L turbo with ... 138 hp.

I don't understand why the Verano doesn't match the Malibu 4 cylinder's mileage though. Same engine and gearbox, a bit smaller and lighter. What gives? Is it a brick aerodynamically?

I've driven a 4 cylinder Malibu, and for a "normal" car I never found it really wanting for power. I'd imagine the typicaly buyer of the Verano isn't looking for a rocketship. So really, the 177 hp isn't too bad (except for marketing comparisons). The Verano buyer WILL likely want to see good fuel economy. I'd be much happier to see a 34-36 mpg hwy number for this car.

Interestingly, the Ventiports on the Verano's hood are false advertising, with six holes to suggest there's a six-cylinder engine underhood.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but historically didn't Buicks have 3 portholes on each side? Even the V8s?

I actually like it. Not as much as the Cruze mind you, but as a modern Buick it fits in with the rest of the lineup.

What I am saying, is that I believe it should have a slightly more powerful engine...with that said, I am surprised GM didn't put in the turbo'd motor from the Cruze (Fully aware of it power levels) with a slight bump in power.

My wife and I were recently shopping for a new car (she decided on a 2010 Honda CR-V, in the end. She liked the GMC Acadia, but it was just too big).

We sat in several GM cars (including the new Buick Regal). Both of us had trouble getting in and out comfortably (because of the low roofline, and the sharp A-pillar). My wife commented, "If I owned this car, I would always be smashing my head on this, getting in!" Same problem with the Camaro, when we looked at that last year. Neither of us is particularly tall (she is only 5' 4", and I'm 6' 1").

I wonder if the Verano is the answer to a question nobody is asking.

And I agree, its a stupid name, very likely to get confused with Murano.

Did she look at the Terrain? The Acadia isn't exactly a direct competitor to the CR-V... Acadia is bigger than Honda Pilot.

Also, I just sat in a Regal for the first time at the Indy auto show recently. I'm 6'2", and I don't recall thinking that the roofline was particularly low. Cars have actually gotten taller in recent years; they just appear to have lower rooflines because the windows have gotten smaller. Though they do have beefy A-pillars to improve rollover crash strength, so that probably negates some of the height increase.

Still, I don't know how a 5'4" woman would have trouble getting in a Regal.

Oh well.

The portholes denoted series. Lower lines got three and higher lines got four.

For example, in 1951 the Special and Super had 3 ventiports per side, but the top of the line Roadmaster had 4 even though all three series had straight 8s.

A 1965 LeSabre only has 3, even though they are all V8s, but an Electra 225 has 4.

I really really like it. I think there was another thread on here where a small buick was bashed and thought to be stupid??? Don't feel like searching. Anyway, it looks A LOT better than the Cruze, and I like the Cruze. When it's "baby time" (couple years) this may be near the top of the list.

Oh heck, they were easy to find. The overall tone seems to be fairly negative...
