New SAE HP ratings; 05 Camry loses 20hp!!
Sorry if this is a repost. Looked but did not see.
On the whole most of the stuff from the General either hit the new power ratings spot on or in many cases suprassed them by as much as 25hp. Quite the opposit of Toyota and Hondah. Check for yourselves.
Car and Driver mini article.
Wonder if this does anything to the Japanese credibility...

If this is true, what else are they falling short on vs. advertised? Makes me wonder.
I do commend them for putting their full lineup through the new test method, but some of those differences in HP are totally unnacceptable. This is especially true when it looks like some of their old ratings were just enough to get them over 300 and 200 HP before. 300+ HP (Acura RL) sure looks better than 290 HP, and 210 HP (Camry) sure looks better than 190 HP.

I can't help but wonder just how many vehicles Japanese makes have sold over the years to emphasize the premise of their high-tech engines' efficiency compared to 'old-fashioned' pushrod engines with underwhelming power outputs. It really is a marketing ploy that the Japanese makers have exploited to the fullest degree.
Maybe GM need to educate the consumers on how good their pushrods really are in comparison to the Japanese offerings for fuel economy... maybe get their powertrain engineers on TV ads?

I remember a while back when Mazda was found to have overrated it's Miatas, on the old SAE method by like 10hp. I wonder what it's power would be measured using this new method... But at least in that case, Mazda was taken to task in the public media and downrated the Miatas by like 12-15hp or something.
I'd think this would be relatively big news for "automotive" column writers for newspagers and non-automotive magazins but not so much as a wimper. Crap, I'm surprised with so many people here that I was the first (maybe?) to post about this here. And I got my copy of C&D late!

Then again after reading a column recently written by Brock Yates with a slam aimed squarely at GM and Chrysler, how can I not pity them and be more sympathetic to thier misbegotten attitude?
IMO, American auto manufacturers probably under-rate the power of their powertrains due to the insurance and lawsuit industry. I'd specifically sight the SVT Debacle along with Mazda's own woes for the latter.

As one of my friends said the other day "No wonder they have a reputation of lasting so long, they dont make enough power or torque to break anything"
I about lost my mind when he said that and he owns a Toyota lol

Well, perhaps that explains why Toyota's numbers (acceleration) were always a little lower than what I expected from a vehicle/engine like theirs. Honda, though rated similarly, always seemed to have performed the best out of the big 3 Japanese.

Pretty much everything from "Japan, Inc" that has gone through the new SAE rating system has dropped its horsepower rating.
Suckers.
Hmm wait, are the carmakers suckers?
Or are all the people who bought the cars suckers?

lol, they should test old cars under this new SAE methods... Our F-bodies (especially 305-310 rated Z28s) would probably see a 40-50HP boost in advertised HP. haha
"Gee, these cars are putting down over 300rwhp..." haha
