Cool New Mustang shown at Las Vegas dealer's meeting.

OK guys, I got an e-mail from someone who went to the Ford dealer intro in Las Vegas (I couldn't go), and they displayed the new Mustang there. Based on the enthusiasm from it, I'd say that it's going to be really, really popular.

As far as appearence, he says it looks like the infamous "blue mustang" drawing from Ford's design studios from some time ago, but has single round headlights behind clear plastic lenses, round driving lights in the grill and rear quarter windows that remined him of the early Shelby Mustangs. He compares it to a 1967 Mustang. It was also said that it would be in showrooms in 18 months!

He wasn't able to get close to it, but if Ford is showing it to dealers now, then the rest of us will almost certainly see it this auto show season.

Anyone else get a chance to sneek a peek?

If it is as you described it will be hella cool. I loved that picture (of the blue one). The 67-68's have always been one of my favorite Mustang shapes... like the one in the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds

He did mention that the front appeared to be a little shorter than the Blue drawing.

I have no doubt that this thing will look great, but i'm more concerned with what type of engines the new Stangs will have. The base GT should be made to outperform the current LS1's, it's only natural. Otherwise I will be dissapointed. And oh, the auto tranny should be more refined. The present auto GT's are slow POS...

Just curious, what do all you "retro haters" think about the general feel of that Mustang picture?

I think if I wanted a late 60's Mustang I'd buy one. So a 2004 late 60's Mustang doesn't appeal to me. From the moment I heard it would be retro-themed I was prepared to be unimpressed. From that drawing, I am just that. Isn't it time we demanded more from automotive designers? Sorry, that's just how I feel. Carry on with the praise.

Yeah, it's a sharp looking--it was the first time around. No doubt this will pick up where the current Mustang leaves off popularity-wise and likely have better performance if Ford continues their current trend. Ford's going to ride the retro bandwagon as far as it'll take them. With no real press opposition to the Thunderbid or GT40, there's no reason for them to think otherwise. I doubt this car will change that thinking.

18 months? Can I pay off my Z in 18 months? :-D

I wonder if they'll put the Aussie falcon's engine in it?

its a nice looking car, but how long will that car see sales like the current stang sells with that appearance?
i dont see it going a full 2 years without alot of "exterior freshening"

I agree, you see this with the PT cruiser and the bug. It seems that auto makers have seemed to go back to refreshening cars every couple of years, which in my opinion is a good thing. Ford has been doing this a lot with the current mustang (I.E. cobra, bullit and mach 1), so I expect the trend to continue.

But the Mustang brings a bit more to the table than the PT Cruiser and Bug, who's only attractive quality is their retro-appearance. Refreshening a car every few years is a good ideal regardless.
