I do agree with the z24 thing, perhaps using that nomenclature would be fruitless in GM's eyes. I think RS would do just fine though.
It's different up here in Canada. The 160hp hatchback Civic is sold as the SIR and has 160hp. The Civic SI-G up here has 127hp, and retails around where I would imagine this new N/A SS would sell for (22,500$ Canadian). Just for reference, the MSRP on the Cobalt SS is around 25,000$ without a sunroof. With no supercharger, I would imagine the Cobalt would sell for around the 22-23K mark (Canadian). And I would much rather have a 170hp Cobalt than a 127hp Civic.

I realize not all SSs were performance monsters, but they always had something different going for them, whether it was looks, handling, whatever. It seems to me that the SS sedan doesn't really look that much different, I don't know how it will handle, but 170 hp, even in the econobox segment, seems so ordinary and blah nowadays.

I say call it an RS or z24.
The point is that Chevy needs a slick, good handling, SS badged car, in the 160-180 hp range, that costs $16,000 to $18,000. It needs to compete with Focus ST, Sentra SE-R, Civic Si, Lancer Raliart, etc,.

These N/A Cobalt SS's will fill the bill perfectly.

.
In the daily driver segment most people go for automatics. I think the highest horsepower compact out now with an auto is the Sentra Se-R at 165. The Cobalts 170 seems decent for people who want a daily driver that can get out of it's own way.

I agree with you on the marketing position....but....I place the 'SS' name with haloed regards. I don't think it should be on anything but the top performance model.

This site has to take the cake for rehash after rehash on the same issue . I think there could be 20 separate threads 6-7 pages long and people would just keep going and going

So sad that that isn't saying much for Chevy. The Cobalt SS will follow in Chevy's award-losing line of aweful cars. They really need to stick their entire design staff in front of a firing squad.

Re: New Features and Changes for 2006 Cobalt's

The fnniest thing to me in this whole thread is people saying that a non-SC SS 'brings down' the SS name, or 'ruins the prestige' of buying the SC SS.

It's a freakin cobalt. There is nothing to bring down. If they want to call the top trim level SS and offer 2 engines, then great. This is the first SS that chevy has trouble keeping on the lots in years, of course they're figuring out more ways to 'sell them'. If slapping SS badges and hoods on base Z28s made them sell, they would have done it then too.

SS's should be RWD or AWD!

That's all I have to say.

Which leaves Trailblazer SS and Silverado SS.

Re: New Features and Changes for 2006 Cobalt's

Which, IMO, is a larger disgrace to the SS nomenclature than a FWD CAR. Those SSs are TRUCKS.

If you guys want to get technical, aside from the '89-'93 454 SSs and the CAR BASED El Camino SSs, there never were any SS pickups. So in theory, by being car-based one could make the argument the Cobalt SS is more "true SS" than a Silverado SS, V8 or not.

Take that one and smoke it, gentlemen I still think the V8/RWD only guys need to get a clue...seriously...

Re: New Features and Changes for 2006 Cobalt's

Not to mention I'm sure the 170hp Cobalt will put up better acceleration numbers than a lot of the V8 powered cars from the 80's. It'll definetly be faster than my 1986 305 TBI Z28 (Now THAT was badging blasphemy).

To each their own - but no thanks.
STOP everyone and read the above post again. If you don't agree then you are either stupid or just illiterate.
