New engines coming from GM
New engines coming from GM
from thecarconnection.com
I'm a little disapointed in the HP # of the 5.3L, I was hoping it would break 300HP. Maybe it was de-tuned for FWD.
Does anyone know if this FWD 5.3L will be teamed with a new 6 speed auto?
General Motors says its plans for new engines and transmissions will result in 50 new engine variants and 10 new six-speed automatic transmission variants in the next few years. The company told journalists assembled inFrance on a background event that the engines would include a new turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 that will show up in the 2006 Saab 9-3, and will produce 250 hp of power and 258 lb-ft of torque. The new engine will be produced at Holden's Port Melbourne engine plant, where the related 3.6-liter version of the V-6 is made. GM also has plans for a new 5.3-liter V-8 engine developed specifically for front-drive applications; the transverse V-8 will put out 290 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. The new six-speed transmissions will include gearboxes made for both front- and rear-wheel drive; GM says that by 2008 it will be producing more than one million six-speed transmissions per year. And finally, GM says by 2007 it will have a hybrid system for its SUV V-8 engines that will combine displacement on demand technology with a strong hybrid system to boost the fuel economy of its big SUVs by 25 percent, while retaining towing performance.

Re: New engines coming from GM
i was thinking the same thing about the 5.3 being detuned
with the 6spd auto in the vette being able to hold 500hp/500tq, i think the fwd would be able to atleast handle more than 300hp
how are they getting 25% better fuel economy out of the suvs?
is dod being used in conjunction with an electric hybrid or what?

Re: New engines coming from GM
Yes, DoD with the electric motor deal will give 25% better fuel economy. Basicly combining the 2 hybrid technologies GM uses now. It looks like it will be in the GMT-900's.
And yes, like the rest of the RWD to FWD engines, they are detuned. The 5.3 in the trucks make 310 and 305 with DoD this year. But a 290hp Grand Prix GXP, Impy SS, and Monte SS does sound pretty friggin cool!

Re: New engines coming from GM
Give me the supercharged V6 anyday. It could easily make 300 HP if GM would not put a glass transmission in it. Also it is much easlier to get power/$$$ mod wise from the blown engine than a V8.
