so its not good enough that both the nightly news (7,930,000 viewers) and the today show (5,200,000 viewers) ran with the story?

i don't know about the other outlets as i didn't watch them.

Subaru is owned by Toyota? I thought they were a division of Fuji Heavy?

Yes - it's "good enough".

Could you not tell I was ribbing you, or are you having a bad day?

Maybe I just don't know how to take a fair play?!?!

Ford's quality has been pretty top drawer (for the price and the market we're talking about) ever since Nasser left and Ford either redesigned each vehicle or went over ways to improve those that weren't redesigned.

Ford stopped those botched introductions cold turkey. The only engine or drivetrain issues have tended to be those from before Ford got their act together. Ford has managed to avoid recalls for a number of years, a feat that Toyota, Honda, and Mitsubishi haven't even been able to do.

Even the Ford Mustang has earned top quality ratings in it's class.

Ford's problem ISN'T quality. If it simply keeps up what it's accomplished in the past 4 or 5 years, it's going to top the Japanese brands in short order.

What Ford needs is to gut it's North American management team. The same team that thinks that the only thing Ford needed was the Mustang and a slew of crossovers. The same guys that saw no need to engineer the brand new German Mondeo or the soon to be unveiled Australian Ford Falcon to either be imported to or also made in the United States.

It's great that Ford makes great quality cars. It's just a shame that save for the Mustang, the F series, the Zephyer..er...MKZ, and the Edge/MKX, Ford the public doesn't seem to be intrested.

Ford needs better marketing across the board -- research, product management, and communications -- as well as the courage to be a little more aggressive with their products. They are definitely on the right track in terms of quality and value-for-money, though.

GM sold their share of subaru to toyota. i don't think it was controlling interest but they're definitely an interested party. someone else probably knows better than i on the subject.

edit:
stolen from wikipedia:
On October 5, 2005 Toyota stated that it will purchase 8.7% of the shares of FHI from General Motors. GM announced that it will divest its 20% stake in and eventually sever all ties with FHI. FHI has stated that there have been 27 million shares (3.4%) acquired before the start of trading by an unknown party on October 6, 2005. It has been speculated that a bank or perhaps another automaker was involved. Toyota announced a contract with Subaru on March 13, 2006. The under-utilized Subaru of Indiana Automotive plant in Lafayette, Indiana will hire up to 1,000 workers and set aside an assembly line for the Camry model, beginning in spring 2007.
so they're not under toyota, i'll update my list
