Mustangs with Police/Persuit Packages again?

PURE SPECULATION at this point, but I have heard a good deal about it lately.
Along with the Crown Vic, Ford needs another smaller car to offer LEAs to go out with.
Something to compete with the likes of the Impala and the old Taurus.

Also, Dodge is known to be offering a couple new models for LEA duty in the next year or two. Might be nice to have Mustang go head-to-head with a Charger Police unit - the Mustang at least had a good reputation as an interceptor... nationwide.

So here's the second one I know of locally...
Mustang Highway Patrol

I have to say, as cool as I think it is, I also think it borders on entrapment.
You and I both know that ricers are going to jump all over this car, what with the racing stripes and tinted windows and all.
MAN, this trooper will wear out pens like toothpicks writing people up for racing and wreckless on I-85 near Charlotte...

More and more these days, you gotta watch what you jump on... huh?!?!

Last week, I passed a white 2004 Tahoe that was as plain as what rolls out of the plant in Wisconsin... except for those little blue lights in the rear window and windshield (headlamps had strobes too). I wondered if it was a Tahoe Persuit Package or simply a plain Tahoe undercover. It was a highway patrol unit, saw the trooper outside it.

Caution to you all my friends!!!

That was my kneejerk reaction, and I still don't find Tahoes to be suitable police offerings from GM, but consider that the police package Tahoe did outperform the Crown Vic in many tests done by the Michigan State Police recently.....

Tahoe police vehicle for typical on-road police work is insane. Shows you how stupid GM management is. Let's see, sell it for 30K and make 10K in profit on a optioned version to a private party or sell a stripped version for 15K and make 1K to the government.

Re: Mustangs with Police/Persuit Packages again?

We had a HUGE discussion about the Tahoe Persuit Package last year - really got some feathers ruffled!

I agree with you guys. I was the one that said I had a problem with a 4500lb SUV, with it's bumpers at my door glass level, coming at me at 137 mph (it's confirmed top speed BTW).

I can see lawsuits coming out the wazoo over that.

Now for park ranger service, border patrol, or in remote areas I can surely see a need for an SUV - especially 4wd. But who needs to go 137mph on a gravel road or goat path?!?!

Yup. Collateral damage out the wazoo if one o these gets in a REAL car chase.

This isn't a new concept; there have been police Tahoes since the mid-90s (going on 10 years now), with the GMT400 Tahoes being offered as police vehicles in 2wd form with the 255 hp Vortec 5.7. They probably aren't much heavier than a Crown Vic or Caprice, at least as 2wds.

But anyway, this thread is about Mustang cop cars. That would be a strange site, methinks, with the heavily retro-inspired looks. The Mustang was somewhat known as a cop car during the Fox-body 5.0 years, but try to picture a '70 Mach 1 with police lights on it (sort of what a new Mustang cop car would resemble).

05 Mustang + LED lighting = DANG.

I think the Tahoe police package is a GREAT idea, as long as the agency doesn't primarily use them for chase duty. We have 3 here, and a Dodge Durango among others, and the officers assigned to them LOVE them. You can NEVER have too much room.

That stang looks good, but the stealth lights scream "REVENUE ENHANCEMENT" big-time.

I've always felt that if I'm speeding along and a clearly marked cruiser with a lightbar pulls me over, that's my own dumb fault for getting a ticket. I wasn't paying attention.

Studies regularly show that one thing, and one thing only slows traffic. A visible, clearly marked cruiser.

I'm having flash backs to my youth when I thought the black and white Texas State Trooper Mustangs were the coolest things ever made. If I had to get pulled over I'd want it to be by something like that.

You could make the same argument about entrapment with the B4C pursuit Camaro, but I will agree that more people would be likely to race the Mustang since its the hottest thing since sliced bread, and it is cleary marked as the V8 model(unlike the B4C, which looked like a V6, but had the LS1 underhood).

Illinois State Police have been using Mustangs as long as I can remember. Fox bodies, SN95's, '99+ GT's. Hell, they even have a Silver GTP and green Caravan

Re: Mustangs with Police/Persuit Packages again?

Just a quick FYI, it's not entrapment if the officer is just cruising along and you pull up, rev, and then take off. No if they rev back or something like that, that's a diffeerent story....
