Very interesting that the bad mouthed Hyundai now has the most reliable car sold as of last model year. Of course Consumer Reports has continued it's proverbial nuthugging of foreign car manufacturers, but this one came as a surprise.

I don't see how it's a surprise. The Koreans have been making great strides in the way they're cars are being put together. They have damn near achieved parity with Japan's top makers. They'll only be getting better too. Hyundai has ZERO exciting cars in their lineup yet they are selling more and more cars every year. That should tell GM something. Arguably, they have displaced Chevrolet's _cars_ as the bargain quality leader. Chevy's only hope is to make the same leaps in quality while offering up a better warrenty at reduced prices. OR ELSE.

Or are people ignoring little problems to "defend" their Korean purchase?

Interesting that the only domestic "top pick" is one of the most recalled cars in history: the Focus. Isn't the theme of that article supposed to be the quality of new cars?

I have been driving a hyundai accent for the past 3 1/2 years, and it has been wonderful, I've never had a problem with it, and it has saved me a fortune.
As far as chevy being the value leader: I don't know about the US, but in Canada, a new hyundai accent today is cheaper than a Chevy Aveo. If I were going to get another car of this sort today, it would be a no-brainer. Besides, the aveo is a re-badged car from the Korean manufacturer who went belly-up.
And about styling: in my opinion, the current hyundai tiburon is way more attractive visually than anything from chevy, except the corvette. The tiburon could use some more power though.

They have come a long way since the days of the pony and the excel.

Yep.

But it's 2004 quality, not the quality of years ago.

However, the irony you bring up is glaring. 2 cars that were pretty much disasters when they came out are now 2 of the best built cars.

I was really impressed with the 2006 Sonata I seen at a recent large car show - reminded somewhat of a Honda Accord.
