It's amaizing how strong 4 cylinders have become. Not just peak HP but overall. Mated to 6 speeds and it makes sense why these sell so well.

This is a base 4 cylinder engine.... No turbo or supercharger helper.

25 years ago, Ford's SVO Mustangs needed turbos just to get 175hp.

8 years ago, SRT4s used turbos to get to 208.

6 years ago, Cobalt SSs got onlt 10hp more than this Malibu's base 4... with a supercharger!

Amazing..... Indeed.

Yes. Engine design is so much better than the old days. More efficient combustion chambers, better head flow... then add gizmos like variable vale timing and direct injection.

If they could get this engine up to 200HP it would be a decent base 6th gen engine. 200HP and 35mpg in a sporty car like the Camaro would probably be pretty popular.

And only 20 hp (although that V6 produced 60 more ft/lbs) less than the geezer 4.0 V6 in the 05-2010 V6 Mustangs.

I wonder if this engine could end up in a next gen Camaro? Provided of course the next car is substantially lighter and people would actually want a base model I4 car that eschewed thrust for economy.

Meh, the Colorado's 4cyl has had 185hp/190tq since 07. Of course at 2.9L its big (for a 4cyl) and thirsty so it is nowhere near as efficient as this will be.

I'm curious to know how much of this engine is truly all new vs the 2.4, vs refined or tweaked...

The real success of this will be in the EPA numbers. They say "above 30 highway"... well duh. 29 mpg on the highway would be flat out failure of the worst kind. Considering the old Malibu was rated at 33 highway without even using direct injection, and the DI 2.4 gets 32 highway in the equinox and brethren compact SUVs... this and improved engine surely can best those by a significant margin, right?

I almost forgot about those engines. In the day, they were borderline marvels outpowering most all V6s of the day (imagine a non-blown 4 cylinder putting out over 300hp today and you'll get the picture).

I recall they were a bit rough, though.
