Malibu drawing.
I sense hatred growing towards corporate styling in this thread. I actually like it. Each car can have its own flare but will look like a car from that company. Everyone here complains about Pontiac, but never BMW? They do the same thing. Same with Mercedes-Benz. Cadillac is starting it right now. I think all Hondas look similar (Civic, Accord, etc). Mazdas have hints of corporate styling in the shape of the headlights and that large mouth looking grill. Corporate styling is very common and it helps to sell cars, and personally, I like it a lot!
Corporate styling sucks. It is almost always boring, and instead of just making the car look great, designers have to put some compromised corporate themes all over everything. Yawn. What does the new accord look like? a lot like the last one, which looked like the one before it, which looked like.... Isn't the giant bowtie on the front enough? Does every Chevy need a Giant Chrome bar as well? How about a nice chrome mustache for the C6?
Ever notice how all the great classics somehow eluded corporate styling?

How about the Viper, the corvette, the Ford Mustang, the 57 Chevy, the 55 T-bird, the 240Z, Mazda RX7, the original Camaro, Miata, MR2, countless exotics, and on and on.
...and didn't other pontiacs adopt the GTO front end, not vice-versa.
I'm sure some people like corporate styling and need to feel like they belong to some kind of group, but when I shop for a car, I want to look at different cars, not one car available in 3 different sizes.

Take away the bad taste details and the future Malibu resembles the current car. It's always a great pity when "corporate styling" results in stagnant designs.
In any event, the styling of the 2004 Malibu is probably of little concern to the average consumer. Most discretionary buyers will still turn to the Camry and Accord, leaving GM to fill the ranks of the rental fleets.

The Mustang's interior is very similar to other Ford cars too.
And back in the 50's, company's didn't have enough different production cars to share corporate styling.
BTW...that Malibu drawing reminds me of a Hyundai Tibouran...

The viper had that look FIRST. It was later used as an "identity" feature on other dodges.

Of course, but I don't see that driving down the road! Well, maybe I do.

"European handling" is great idea, but does it really make a difference in a car aimed primarily towards fleet sales? Instead of conducting consumer clinics, GM should be polling the people at the Alamo check-in counter. Maybe the people purchasing these cars as "buybacks" will appreciate the difference, though I doubt it.

You really don't like GM competing with imports, do you? Most would wait till they actually see how the car's made before condemning and then burying it.

How does that compare with the "special finance" tire-kickers that the local Chevy dealer draws in? Isn't it curious that Honda and Toyota franchises don't have to conduct monthly "one time only" sales? If it wasn't for the big trucks and SUVs, Detroit would be in really bad shape. Somehow I doubt that the 2004 Malibu will change the trend.
With GMs reputation, they need to get people to check them out somehow. Sales and 0/0% is a good way to do it. There are people out there who would blindly buy anything Toyota makes regardless as to how they actually rank in quality or value.
That having been said, the cars comming out next year are the very first ones with Bob Lutz's influence, and year after next should be the first all Lutz cars.
As the new guy on the team, I'm willing to wait till I see what he's done before I pass judgement.
