That's the kind of attitude that took them from 80% market share to 28%.

The Cobalt may be okay. The styling may be okay . The interior may be okay . The performance may be okay . The quality may be okay . But in the end, the whole car is just okay .

I'd like to see GM do more cars like they used to and like Corvette. A car here and there that can go head to head with anything else in its segment AROUND THE WORLD and come out ahead in almost every category INCLUDING PRICE .

Pretty good point. If you are selling more cars at a similar price using cheaper components making a bigger profit, then what's the problem.

But on the opposite end, if some one is selling less cars using more complex components with a smaller profit, that would mean they are offering the better car for the same money, wouldn't it?
Sounds like Mustang vs. Camaro/Firebird

The problem is that the more perceptive buyers will notice, and even if they don't notice on the test drive, they sure will when they get it home.

The Cobalt might be okay in the Uniteds States, but in Europe or Japan it would be laughed off the market. Like so many American-nameplate cars, they aimed at a receding target. The 1999 VW Jetta was the benchmark for the 2005 Cobalt. (Interestingly, the 1987 Honda Accord was the benchmark for the 1995 Ford Contour - and look what happened to that car.) It appears that the Domestic have never learned to be ahead of the game.

Interestingly, sales of the new Golf A5 have be lousy in Europe. The reason? The Golf's platform-mate, the Audi A3, has been stealing sales away from the VW marque. The more sophisticated platform has lead buyers towards the more upmarket, higher profit-margin model. Is there a lesson in this for GM?

Um, that car is still sold in Europe. Too small for the U.S. market, but the fact that it survives there and not here doesn't really seem to drive the point you're trying to make home for me. Who laughed what of the market where again?

I'd say the best lesson for GM is to keep their inexpensive cars on inespensive platforms that can be sold inexpensively and remain reliable, unlike overpriced VW/Audi product, and to continue the development of world-class platforms such as Sigma for luxury products. They tried what VW/Audi are doing. It was called Cimarron. It did not work out well. I think their current path is fine.

I agree. When will they learn that a comeback requires something so strikingly different, so compelling, so out-of-the-park that even the biggest naysayers and brainwashed idiots have to pause and say, "Wow, I wasn't expecting that?"
