So basically Lutz is saying even if GM does well in their markets they'll lose number 1 to Toyota. At least they aren't denying it.

They lost my business to Toyota. The only Chevrolet I'll be buying again will be a classic. (67 Chevelle is on my list)

Where in the IE are you at? Nice car.

I wouldn't bet on it, they don't come close in vehicle sales. But I guess you never know. Kinda scary.

I guess I should read the article before I post. I thought they were talking about US sales. That's crazy.

Fontana. Scion tC owners on the Camaro board unite!

Personally, I like Chevy classics but wouldn't own one, most of them are either too expensive or too common. The Route 66 show around here has like hundreds of Camaros and Chevelles...for good reason, I just like to be a little more unique. That's why I have a Cougar...only like 4 of us out of a couple thousand cars at Route 66 2 years ago, and I was the only 69

I won't be back to Chevy any time soon unless they really shape up. The trend isn't looking great. New Malibu was a step but not good enough, and the Impala and Monte are still awful, even restyled. Can't polish a turd, as they say.

Corvette is great, I'll buy one as soon as I have a spare $50,000.

Cobalt is almost there, but when I stacked it up against my car it still would have lost the comparison. Especially since the non SS models don't look all that exciting.

Sadly it looks like Saturn is going to get more decently styled cars than Chevy any time soon.

Seems this part was over looked:

"It may be impossible to stop even if we gain market share in every one of our markets because Toyota is so huge and expanding so fast in the Asian markets.

"If they only grow with the market in those rapidly growing Asian markets, they risk knocking us off."
GM is at risk of becoming the number 2 world automaker due to Toyata's aggressive expansion in Asia.

In the US Toyota is currently at 12%, right behind Chrysler's 13% (good thing Chrysler increased market share this year). GM is running around 25% in the US, and is in no danger here of being knocked off by Toyota.

If Toyota expands to say 15-18% here in the US, and GM still stays well above 20%, Toyota will still likely become the world's largest automaker due to it's success in other world markets.

In short, what Bob Lutz is saying is that GM is at the verge of becoming an automaker that's #1 only in the US & Australian markets, while Toyota beats GM in worldwide production.

That's why they're so close to knocking Ford off the number 2 spot if they haven't done that already. I know they were really close last year.

Toyota sells over 2million units in Japan alone. Ford and GM are almost non-existant in the Japanese market. Of course, they sell well in Europe too, and are doing really good here in the states. But the asian market is definitly boosting Toyota up.

Also, sales are always important, but profits are what really count and Toyota just kills the Big2.5 in that department. And so in a way, they already are the #1 automaker.

Isnt GM doing fantastic in China as well? I havent heard word-one about Toyota's involvement in China? GM is #2 in China, right behind VW.
I think that GM can get a serious foot hold in China, boost sales of Opel and Vaux in Europe, and continue to improve product here in the US.

the american automaker isnt existent in japan because their govt. doesnt allow them to compete.

despite that GM will still hold its own despite higher operating expenses.

I don't think Toyota will be catching GM in the US for a long long time if ever. But world-wide, yeah I've been saying it for years now that it was going to happen, no ifs ands or buts about it, regardless of what we do or don't do here in the states. The rest of the world is going to choose the superior product for the $$... they have no patriotic ties to the US or Japan.

Not if you're the kind of person that automatically gives the nod to anything Chevrolet.

In that case, for example, Corolla would be boring, and a 4 door Cavalier would be "exciting".
