Sounds like the same problem Nissan had not too long ago, tho I'm not sure they recalled theirs with so few incidents...sounds like a product of the "Farming Out" philosophy, things like cheap switches and even harnesses are sometimes constructed by the lowest bidder...

Hey at least GM is taking care of the problem without having the Fed get involved like some auto companies do.

Here's something that I find rather funny.

NYSE 16:01 02/06/2004

Genl Motors $48.64

Ford Motor Co $14.28

I believe "sad" is the better way of describing it.

Needless to say, Ford too has its own issues.

Edit: Toyota: $68.70. These guys just don't quit.

That's not true at all - it's often taken arm-twisting by the Feds to get GM to act on a safety defect (like the POS wiper motor on my truck).

Anyone know if those recalled GM ignition switches were made by Lear?

The point that I was trying to make is that GM has a better reputation of not being forced to recall then some other auto makers (Ford for example).

I would like to hear about some the safety deficits that incur the arm twisting often with GM though. Not that I don't believe you or anything, I just honestly haven't heard of many that I can recall to memory.

In some cases things were not really Fords fault. For example, the 13 million tires recalled because of the Firestone fiasco. There is a class action lawsuit going on against Firestone right now because other vehicles with their tires have had catastrophic failures causing injuries and deaths. Another way to look at that stock report is that Fords stock has doubled from $7.xx a share a few years ago to over $14 now.

In the case of the pickup-truck wiper motors, it took over 6,000 complaints of failures before action was taken, and that was basically after the feds threatened to step in. I'm not saying that they're better or worse than others in the industry; many companies out there could be much more responsive to issues, especially when a lot of them know there's a problem before the public does.

Scott, Ford played a huge role in the Explorer debacle, not the least of which was sacraficing safety for comfort in recommending a tire pressure.

95 Z/28 LT1, keep in mind that share price is kinda meaningless when comparing two companies - it's better to either look at the price trend, or to look at the market cap (share price x number of shares). With regards to economic performance, neither Ford nor GM should be doing much bragging right now (just look at GM's profit margins on auto sales the last couple of quarters).
