Looking to outrun the cops in Nassau County? Well, it will happen next year!
If you live in Nassau County (New York), I have some bad...or should I say some good news for you. According to some sources- I heard this report on WCBS NewsRadio88- Nassau County Police will be replacing the Crown Vics next year with- get ready to laugh-
2004 Chevy Wimpalas
The reason is because the Crown Vics are 2 and a half years old and they eat up fuel. Plus it will save money on Nassau County's budget.
Well, when the Wimpalas hit the road, I will fell sorry for the cops driving. How much do you wanna bet they will NEVER catch any speeders.

The new Impalas are probably just as fast as the Crown Vics when speed and acceleration is a concern. I still think the Ford is better suited for Law enforcement though. Having real body on frame construction is more durable for the abuse the cars get. What we need is the old B body with an LS1 or the Holden Caprice would do just fine.
News Flash!..................there are many, many police departments that use current Impalas as Police cars. I see at least 75% Impalas around here. Also, I don't think the Impalas are any slower than the crow vics.
Impala with 3800 is slightly faster than a Crown Vic.
I'm not sure if the S/C 3800 will be an option on the police Impalas. I'm seeing a lot more Police Impalas around here, NYC is now about 1/2 Impala 1/2 crown vic

I have the latest edition of Sport Compact car in which they tested various Michigan state police cars. Heres the specs on 3 of them:
Chevy Impala
0-60: 9.25 sec.
Quarter Mile: 17.02 @ 83.2 mph
Top Speed: 126 mph
Dodge Intrepid
0-60: 9.14 sec.
Quarter Mile: 16.98 @ 85.05 mph
Top Speed: 136mph
Ford Police Interceptor
0-60: 9.14 sec.
Quarter Mile: 16.99 @ 84.10 mph
Top Speed: 128 mph
Edit - The Impala stopped the quickest, 133 ft. compared to 145 and 148 feet for the Dodge and Ford respectively.
Suprisingly through the road course the Ford was the fastest. It clocked 1:41.66. Second place went to the Dodge at 1:42.07 and last to the Impala at 1:44.25.

And you guys laughed at the idea of a 2WD Police Tahoe, at 0-60 in 8.4sec. with a 5.3L it will leave all those other cops in its dust
Why does ford put the weakest V8 they build into its cop cars???

Impalas are pretty popular with northeast city police departments where there isn't alot of high speed handling needs. They are pretty quick (I rented one for a week a couple of weeks ago), and they handle extremely well in the city.
But there's a reason why you almost never see them as Highway Patrol cars. It's called FWD.
