Maybe they're including tax or something.

OK, one of my pet peeves is the way Automotive Journalists are always coming out with stories on how there are no “cars of today” that might be collectible someday. Well, there’s “collectible” as in Barrett-Jackson auctions and 4 million dollar ‘Cuda’s, and there’s just plain fun (and in some cases very rare) cars that would be affordable collectors cars of the future. When we last talked about a similar article, the subject was 70’s and 80’s future collectibles (http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=326131), so here’s a list off the top of my head (pardon the typo’s and any incorrect dates!) using 1992, as the starting point:

That link you provided just reminded me that it appears I like to bring back the same subject up every year or two.

See how those don't match up?
Do they both have 200,000mi and a peeling paint job because they have never been waxed?

If you paid $25k for a TAURUS in 1990 - you got HOSED!!!
I believe that was the first year SHO's, they were kinda pricey...
They were also pretty powerful for a V6 back it their day.

I don't know how things are now for "kids these days" since 60's iron is more scarce and expensive now, but when I was first getting into cars in the late 80's early 90's the 60's iron was always way cooler than the "modern stuff."

So while the 80's and 90's cars may be collectible, the 60's cars will probably always trump them. They also have the advantage of being easy to fix/restore.

Would you pay more for a 1990 Taurus if it had low miles and a mint paint job?

If collector car, means rare car, as in todays market, there are some very rare muscle cars that most don't know about. And no I'm not gonna say their names.
Or...you could go to Barret Jackson with a one off car....Actually I think someone should do this...Like a yellow 94 z28 with beige seats, convertable, cd player, deluxe hub caps, with optioned floor mats.

Or you could pull off one of the stripes and say it was a factory error, like the double stamped quarter.

This may include cars like the scions that everybody has and has a lot of strong memories attached to, or cars like the Corvette that not many people had but everybody lusted after one.

So say in another 30 years the 20 years olds of today will be 50, have some money to burn, and want to find a scion like they used to drive when they were a kid... or maybe they want a C5 or C6 like they used to lust after as a kid.

OMG.........

Threxx and I agree on something!!!!!

Hell just froze over!!!!!

Or be able to find a 80 year old 67 Corvette L88 Roadster, black with red stripe....
Gunna be funny laying down a patch of rubber in a near-100 year old car. Lets hope there is still gas to fuel it with.

Popularity helps but it is really all supply and demand!!!

There are many cars that no one wanted at times and now are worth as lot of money.

Superbirds were hated as were used Ferarri GTO's in the 70's now try to find one cheap.

Not all collectable cars were popular in their time.

Just now how many are left and how many want them today is what counts.

Just ask a 1978 Pace Car speculator.

The SHO lanched in 1989 for less than $20,000 - a lot more than the 12k of a base Taurus, but not outrageous, and very fast for the time.

Hard to believe now that the Taurus was a Car and Driver "10 Best" car for several years between 1986 and 1992.

You have to wonder what Ford were thinking with the 1996 redesign. Disastrous styling and poor quality control to boot. Then they just gave up on the thing.

I wish I still had my '84 Omni GLH. I tried to keep it, but in the end I didn't have the space for it, so it had to go. I want to resist selling my old SVT Contour, we'll see.

My buddy bought a brand new '78 Grand Am. My other buddy had a '78 T/A 6.6 motor with 9,000 miles on it, which he offered to me for $900. I had no use for it, so I got my TWO buddies together. Voila! '78 Grand Am with a '78 T/A 6.6 motor. I could have bought that car years later, for like 500 bucks, but didn't (no space, damnit).

Should have kept my '70 Camaro SS as well.
