List of 789 Chrysler dealerships being closed

http://online.wsj.com/public/resourc...st05142009.pdf

I know there is already a link in the other thread, but figured this deserved a thread of its own. They are closing 17 of 24 dealerships in my state! (WV) Most of them are smaller dealerships in small towns throughout the state. Two of the larger dealerships plan on staying open & pick up another brand or continue to be a large used car lot.

On the evening news they interviewed serveral Chrysler customers who were upset they would have to drive 50+ miles in order to get their new vehicles serviced from a dealership they didn't even purchase from.

Anyone figure out if Jason E's dealership was effected?

SC is losing 11, 3 of which are in the Charleston Area alone. None in my area, luckily! We've already lost a large Chevrolet Dealership.

The one in Columbia, if I'm thinking of the right one, is a very large dealership, the Dick Smith one. "Dick Smith" seems to sell almost every make. There's a Dick Smith Mitsubishi dealership across the road from me. There's also Dick Smith used cars so maybe that one can convert to something else?

What choice do the dealers have if they WANT to stay open? Move to another make?

It was a little suspenseful going through that list, as the family of a friend owns a Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep franchise. Luckily they made it through, but I still recognized quite a few names on the list, including the Dodge dealer a block away from the Chevrolet I work for. Sad, sad stuff.

Based on his location, he probably works for either Bertera or Enfield. Enfield is being closed.

This is crazy. Anyone else think the future will just have Auto Malls. That's it.

Actually, if you look at retail as a whole, athe auto world has been one of the last hold out's of a 'mom & pop' sort of environment with small family owned dealerships.

I used to work for a family owned hardware chain of about 20 store of varying sizes through high school and college... they opened in 1846 and once Home Depot and Lowe's moved into town, they were out of buisness within two years around 1999.

Seems the reasons behind the dying mom & pop shops might be a bit different in the auto-world compared to regular retail though.

My local chrysler dealership is on the list.
They are the only dealership in town.
It's a wealthy town at that with a median household income in 2007: $50,000
The town is kind of an oaisis 50 miles from any major city although is has many many smaller towns around it. That major city being STL where median household income in 2007 is only: $34,191
On paper this is a dumbass move on chryslers part.
