Lightweight drag version of Challenger coming very soon...
This will be a special factory package built for NHRA-sanctioned Stock Eliminator drag racing. Features will include a unique serial number sequence, variations of current Hemi and 5.9 liter Magnum engines, automatic or manual transmission, and special lightweight features
That's a good thing they're not putting a vin on it. Now they don't have to worry about emissions or crash testing so they can make the car as powerful and as light as possible. Plus since it's not a street car they can put slicks on it and do whatever they want to the suspension. The car will be a lot faster this way out of the box.
Sounds like it's basically a tub.
I really wish they could have engineered light weight components that could be added to a streetable car.
With five passenger coupes basically extinct, I'm sure a lot of people would love, and pay to knock a significant amount of weight off this thing, so that they could have a powerful, practical car that didn't guzzle as much gas or handle like a yacht.

Awesome move by chrysler , it doubful they will have the slightest trouble selling everyone they make . Hats off to them .
At the rate race teams are hacking up brand new Mustangs , something like this should be a no brainer for GM too with the Camaro . As compicated as new car electronics are getting , removing all that crap , while integrating a simplified body harness to the engine harness would be rather appealing , amongst all the other deletions .

Finally, the Challenger is not a Camaro or Mustang's direct competitor. If Pontiac still made a GTO, Chevrolet still made an Impala, or Ford still made an MN12 Thunderbird, then the Challenger would be a direct competitor. It seats FIVE full sized adults, has a much larger trunk, and more closely resembles a midsize traditional muscle car than it does a pony car. The only thing it has in common with the Mustang and Camaro is V8, rear drive, and a clear performance marketing campaign.
Despite the Challenger's size and weight it will be compared to a Mustang and Camaro even if not intended by Chrysler. How could it not, 2 dr RWD V8 with retro muscle car looks practically lifted from the 1970 model. The Challenger/'Cuda were direct competitors to Camaro and Mustang before and for any car lover getting out of a Siberian jail after 38 years is going to think the Challenger is ready to street race on Woodward with the GT500. He'd also probably wonder why the muscle cars today look like they did when he got busted but that's for another time.

I didn't read the article, but is this a limited edition car or can you go down and buy one if you've got the loot any time you want? Thats the cool thing about the FR500x program, no limited edition this or that. If you've got the cash, you can get a brand new race car from Ford.
