Lets say gas is $8 a gallon summer 2010, what car do you buy?
Well, I got my 91 Caprice in 97 for $4k. I drove it until I got my 96 ImpalaSS in 2000 for $17k. I drove that until I got married in 2005, when I started driving my wife's 96 Olds LSS (that she had owned for 2 years.) That's when I got her a year-old 2004 Impala that she'll probably drive until at least 2011 but probably longer. And in 2006 I picked up an unsold 2005 Silverado for $22.5k.
The Caprice had 72k miles on it when I got it and now it has over 150k, but it doesn't get driven. The SS was bought 61k miles on it and it quit being my daily driver after 170k miles. The LSS had about 140k miles on it when we sold it. The 04 Wimpala had under 20k miles on it, but it's close to 70k now. My truck had 91 miles on it when I signed the papers (some of that was from my test drive) and now it just passed 22k.
I like to get my money's worth out of my vehicles.
By 2011 if gas DOES reach $8 a gallon (which I'm doubting) then I will probably keep my truck, and depending on where I work at that time, I may pick up a smaller lighter weight vehicle. Maybe something like a 90s Nissan 240? An S10 or Colorado? 350Z? C5/early C6 Corvette? By then a Cobalt SS might be cheap, er, inexpensive. Hell, earlier this year I was considering buying a large go-cart to drive around town

I guess it depends on whether you consider a vehicle as a utility item or an entertainment item.
Ultimately I guess you have to deicde whether the value derived from the vehicle in terms of fun outweighs spending that money on other forms of entertainment. Or if the entertainment value outweighs the added financial stability of saving the extra gas money
