Ladies and Gents... Blown 4.4 Northstar vs. Cobra 4.6...

K, which one makes the most power AS DELIVERED?

GM claims 440hp for the blown Northstar 4.4, and we don't know if that's another "nudge, nudge, wink, wink..." GM horsepower rating.

Ford claimed 390hp for the blown 4.6, but they were fudging to some extent.

Which one has more snot in reality?

Hmmm... I very curious.

One thing will be true for sure... I'll bet the aftermarket for the blown Northstar will be very small so when the modding begins the 4.6 should pass it easily. But as delivered, I think the 4.4 might be the powerful motor.

Well the Caddy engine is at least 440HP or they couldn't advertise it as such

Fords Cobra V8 puts out avg dynos between 405HP and 420HP

Stock, the win goes to Caddy, Modded, probably Ford since there is no replacement for displacement and The Ford can get to 500HP easy. We will just have to wait and see with the Cadillacs upgrade potential.

Re: Ladies and Gents... Blown 4.4 Northstar vs. Cobra 4.6...

The big question for me is which motor is cheaper and more dependable to bump up the boost on to serious power-making levels? I'd bet the answer is the Cobra no matter what the budget and power level is.

BTW... isn't the 4.6 kinda old news now? I mean it's the powerplan from the previous-gen. Isn't the new Cobra going to be out any time now?

It'll be out sometime 2006 as a 2007 model. It's sporting a twin-screw blower (finally!), and a nice 5.4L of displacement. It should be making 450+ hp and 450+ lb-ft of tq with the 8psi factory boost setting. Hints from SVT point to fgures closer to 500hp, but we shall see.

Stock for stock, i'm positive the S/c'd 4.4L Northstar makes more power than the 4.6L Cobra. In reality Cobra may be making 410-420hp maxx, and that is nowhere near the 4.4's 440hp. As far as differences, Cobra has the advantage of .2L of extra displacement, and the Northstar has the advantage of the better blower (twin screw vs roots) and stock boost (12 psi vs 7.5-8psi). As far as stock goes, the Northstar packs a bit more juice. As far as mods, i'm sure the Ford 4.6s aftermarket makes it the better candidate for mods. I wonder how the Cadillac's internals compare??? Anyone think the 4.4 is capable of 800+ with the stock block/internals/heads? I'd like to see one pushed to its limits.

I don't think the aluminum block N* can take HUGE boost like the iron block Mod can but it will weigh a lot less.

The actual aluminium shouldnt be an issue, blown stock-block LS1s are well over 1000 hp now. I dont know how well the Northstar block was designed though.

THe Northstar shrunk from 4.6 to 4.4L to give it thicker walls to handle the added boost. I bet we will be seeing some 650HP+ tuner V-series in the coming year.

Here's the $60K question. Is the Northstar intercooled?

If it is then watch out. I'd be expecting 500+rwhp with little more than pulley, exhaust, intake, and tuning.

It is.

Anyone have the detailed specification on the engine?

Yeah, but the blown Mercedes ARE the AMG models. He was asking (I believe) how many people with that type of car are going to do pulley swaps to get an extra 150 hp (like Cobra owners do often), since the discussion was about how well the engine could handle extra boost, etc.

Of course, there are several AMG Benz owners who do in fact mod their cars, but probably not in the same numbers as the Cobra owners...

Pick up the latest hotrod... The one with Big Red on the cover. They did a full 3-4 page tech article on it.
