I think they're just talking about using Jeep platforms, not necessarily buying Jeep. I can't imagine Chrysler giving away Jeep. It would be like GM selling Cadillac.

Platform sharing would be ok. I hope they are not selling off the Jeep brand.

I don't know anything about this company but it would be nice to see Jeeps that are actually jeeps instead of Chrysler rebadges.

Yeah those Wrangler/Grand Cherokee/Commander are such rebadges.

Jeep could be a seperate brand all on it's own. I just hope it stays (mostly) domestic.

Chrysler is really destroying jeep. A few problems I see:

1) Commander is pointless with Grand Cherokee there..kill it
2) Compass is retarded, the Dodge variant is enough.
3) Patriot...seems Liberty has this ground covered to me. Liberty could use a diesel engine again to make up some lacking MPG/power (and a 6-speed auto).
4) Nitro is only sucking away potential Liberty sales imo. Not sure nitro belongs as a dodge.

If those problems are correct, i don't see any reason to get rid of Jeep. I think overall Jeep could use some more diesel technology. It's nice to see the GC getting diesel, would be nice if liberty got one again like i mentioned (maybe not such a ****ty one this time around). Why not a diesel in all models..i don't see why liberty, wrangler, wrangler unlimited couldn't all use a common turbo 4 or 6 diesel engine.

I've missed the Cherokee since the last one rolled off in 2001. All these overpriced chrome and pleather SUV's, and little moonscape-looking front drive unibody "things" that are appearing in Jeep's lineup make me question their viability as a brand.

Well, it will be funny when Jeep gets sold off to an Indian company...

mdaction -- A message board is a tough medium to communicate true feeling, so I'm sorry if that came across as "funny--comical." It's more "funny--strange/sad" than anything, and "funny" was probably the wrong word choice in the first place.

Jeep is a true iconic American brand and they've had great products in the past, and still have a few darn good ones.

The experience will be cheapened if/when Jeep is sold to a foreign company. Americans are truly great at making heavy duty vehicles, trucks, and "Jeeps." It will be a big loss to the automotive world.

That said, I DO hope Jeep tries to stick to its roots. The Wrangler and Liberty (Cherokee replacement) are the only true vehicles that I think have "Jeep-esque" qualities.

Wrangler FTW

Only 4x4 I would trade a car for.

On my wish list.

Chrysler allready has announced that several jeep/dodge products will be killed off at the end of their current cycles, the Nitro, compass and commander being some of them.

I also like diesel power but the prices they are asking is ridiculous. Until very recently you could only get the 3.0TD in the GC limited, starting price was $37,500 and the rebates are never offered for the TD models. I think in 2008's you can now get the TD on sports but its still a very expensive option. The liberty was similar.

They really screwed up when the dropped the Cherokee. They had sold millions and they just dropped the name. I owned one, and next to my first car, 89 firebird formula, its my next favorite vehicle. They have to bring it back in the future, a simple box, light weight, good V-6/I-6, RWD based. With the nice gearing (3.55) and the 3500lb curb weight XJ's were pretty sporty and fun to drive around town and on the highway. We averaged 19-20 mpg. They have about the same cargo area as a commander but with 30-40% better mpg. I will probably buy another used one. I dont know if a new one should have a solid front axle or not. I would buy one either way if they made something similar to the orginal. The new ford flex seems like a lowered version of what a new cherokee should be.

My 05 Grand Cherokee is a POS and I am happy it is a lease. First things first, they have to solve this problem with the rotors warping within 20K miles out of the gate.
