It's official.....no DOD in '05 Vette.

I pulled this line out of a GM press release from SEMA.

"A car version of the Gen IV engine without DOD will debut in the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette."

That's surprising. I figured that they would release it with the c6.

doesn't bother me at all. in fact i think DoD should stay off the 'Vette or any other all out performance car/truck to reduce complexity. those engines are going to see a lot more flogging than your average Yukon or Tahoe...

Then do you think they should go back to the less complex Gen I V8? Don't be afraid of new tech, Do you really want to be driving around in a 175HP 5.7L Vette like they had back in 1978?

uh, first tell me how DoD helps make more power and then I'll answer your question...

It give the car better gas milage which allows GM to put in a bigger V8 that puts out more HP and still meet CAFE standards

would you rather have a 405HP 5.7L that gets 28mpg or a 500HP 6.4L that gets 28mpg

1. if they're putting a bigger engine in the vette without DoD it means they have no problems with CAFE as it is.

2. its perhaps more efficient than the GEN 3 even w/o DoD.

3. DoD isn't as effective as you're suggesting. by GM's own numbers it bumps the MPG by at most 7%-8%. wich is only 2 extra MPG on top of 28MPG. while every little bit helps, 2MPG isn't very significant. especially in a performance vehicle.

having said that, if DoD is proven as solid and reliable tech, i obviously wouldn't bitch about having it under the hood.

I worry about that system anyway. I would always be wondering. Did that system come on like it was suposed to? Or should I be faster. Im the same way with vacuum secondary carbs vs, mechanical ones

No worrys about if DOD was hurting you or not. You know people would figure out away to disable it ASAP.

Another thing, why does GM have to go to a 6.4 to get 500 HP? It would be cool to have the cubes to mod the motor, but other than that GM doesn't have to give a bigger motor unless 6.4 is the motor for the Z06.

6.4L is said to be the size of the next Z06 engine, your right, there will probably be a fuse or something you can pull to turn off DoD

Speaking of DoD, I've been wondering. Since some of the cylinders shut off sometimes, does it sound like a 4-banger? Wouldn't matter much with stock exhaust, but on cars like the Vette where people put on aftermarket (louder) exhausts, that would matter a lot.

GM's D.O.D. increases milage by 8-25%, depending on conditions, not merely 7-8%. 25% is attained during highway driving. A Vette with D.O.D. could get approx. 35mpg highway.

The Vette gets decent milage to begin with, and GM doesn't sell that many in the first place. Their SUV's will have the biggest impact to their CAFE when they get D.O.D.
