It's official: GM will end GMS for everyone on August 1

Interesting that they did not extend until Labor Day, but they probably feel that the program has done what it was intended to do...clear out the '05's and make a big splash doing it.

Here's a good article giving some background on the GMS incentive.

http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosins...A01-260705.htm

Note the real reasons for the program:

The eureka moment for Hill -- GM's director of retail marketing programs -- came in May as the company was wrestling with how to move more than a million unsold 2005 cars and trucks off dealer lots before 2006 models arrived.

GM's sales had been in the doldrums all year and its U.S. market share had slipped below 27 percent.

The usual summer sell-down promotions, with big cash rebates, wouldn't be dramatic or catchy enough to do the job. The automaker also wanted a promotion that would build a natural bridge to its new pricing concept for 2006 models -- lower sticker prices and additional features. The goal: Promote the value of the vehicle rather than rebates or cut-rate financing.

that's certainly better to "promote the value of the vehicles" and hopefully in time, people's perception of "GM cars + expecting big rebates = cheap cars" can change.

I know I'm guilty of that when I see ads for GM vehicles, and I instinctively look for the huge rebates or I don't even get excited. Not to say this for only GM cars...I also do the same for Jeep and Chrysler, but I don't seem to do the same for the other manufacturers.

I look at other makes and go "WOW..there are suckers out there that would actually pay this much for this car "

I hope someone at GM notices that out of all the Big 3 cars the ones that are the most sucessful are the RWD cars. If there is one thing Detroit does 100% right, it is build RWD cars.

Hmmm... and there will go their above-30% market share that they just gained back, too, if Ford and DC (I think DC is doing it too, right? I can't remember) don't stop shortly after.

I think step one for them is to absolutely not consider raising the prices at ALL on the new GMT-900 truck and SUV models. There's already more than enough markup on body on frame SUVs... especially the luxury models. Don't get all excited about them, raise the prices, and then have to start dumping on massive rebates all over again.

I think GM's key is to improve long term durability, improve perceived quality, and still keep prices low enough to keep sales high. Then don't expect immediate results... expect people to buy a GM car just to see if they've gotten better, and given then a few years to see that is has (if it has).

The quad cab 4x4 cost as much as a full size. The priceing on these toy trucks is way out of line.

When i bought mine I could have got a Silverado Crew with the same options for only $2500 more. I still got the colorado for the smaller size (city parking) and better fuel economy (I avg. 20-21mpg).

With out my $2300 GM card earnings I would have bought a used truck.

I agree, but would add; stand behind your products. There were at least two items on my last truck that should have been part of a recall. If it's not part of a recall, don't rape your customers for the repair (I know the dealer had more to do with that than GM). Those two things are what drove me away, and I've been a loyal customer since 1977.
I'll refrain from telling you what I just bought in order to keep the flames low.
