Post It's been awhile. Let's start the GTO argument again.

It's been awhile since anyone stopped work long enough to swing over to the internet and debate the new Monaro based GTO with the original version from the 60s.

We all have heard how the original GTO represented American muscle, and when it 1st came out was the American standard for all that came since.

I never understood the outrage of you GTO fans of the original. I believed the Monaro represented everything the original GTO was. A V8 package in a low keyed coupe. But I will now say I was wrong.

The Monaro based GTO does not pay homage to the original. I came across an article that proved me wrong.

So to all of you fans of the original GTO, I apologize. Although the new GTO is a great car, after reading this article on GTO's 40th anniversairy:

http://www.autoweek.com/cat_content...._code=08239356

I must say, the original is truly better.

The current GTO is more or less here just to test the waters and see if there is even a demand for such a vehicle. (Of course we know there is) Then when they start to build them in the US they can have a styling change and get some more of the styling cues from the classic GTO's.

The whole spiel from Bob Lutz about that's what a GTO would look like today if it had evolved was crap IMO bcause all they did was put a nose cone on that Monaro and nobody knows what it would look like... Until the next generation of them comes out. That's what I am saving my money for anyways.

I agree. That spiel about the original GTO evolving to what the new GTO looks like IS crap.

Could also save your money & get an original one?

Nahhhh, you can't beat a factory new car with a warranty. Besides, I've had enough of buying other peoples headaches.

Now, just as long as the quality dosen't go to hell when they begin production in the US. Which I think is a pretty valid point IMO. GM hasn't ever built a car with the quality of the Monaro, (build quality, interior fit and finish, etc), in the US for the price they are planning on asking for it. (Using the term ever kind of loosely)

I bet they are going to hike the price a bunch when the US car goes into production.

Another point I would mention is, If the GTO is supposed to debut for around $35000, and the Caddie CTS-V is also supposed to come in at around $35000, then why would anybody want ~50 less horsepower for the same price? Is it the name?
Are these two cars in the same class, or is the CTS-V a 4 door?

Egh, why not.....

I never really cared too much with how the new GTO compared to the original.

First of all, I don't see where the new GTO is any better than the LS1 F-bodies. "OH, it's got luxury interior and sprawling back seat! That's what having a performance car is all about"

The new GTO is expensive in relation to other performance cars. I don't recall anyone asking GM for a BMW competitor.

The new GTO is DULL. It looks like an oversized Cavalier with a Grand Prix front bumper. I know that I've stated this about a 1000 times already, but people still somehow find this car exciting.

Theres more, but it's late and I have a test tommorow.

Well, GuionM, I'm wondering how many will click on your link to see that what you refer to "the original GTO" is a Ferrari, and not a Pontiac!

Red face

Guess I should have clicked on the link before I went off. Guess that's what happens when you are on a dial-up connection and it's getting late.

Oh well, we all know there is no comparison to the original.
My questions/comments still stand however.

I read over the post then clicked on the link then read back over the post and brought back the link. I was wondering what the heck, guionM, this is about the Ferrari GTO and your asking about the Monaro based Pontiac GTO! I see your humor but the Ferrari GTO and the Pontiac GTO, besides 4wheels, tires, seats, sterring wheel and head and tail lights have nothing in common never have never will! Ferrari GTO

Man I wish I had been around in 1962 to get a Ferrari GTO for $23K! Thats what I paid for my Z28 40 years later. I hope my resale is a fraction of what the Ferrari GTO is, I'd be rich!

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to actually click on to that site, and realize there was a reason I put the word ORIGINAL in itallacs.

Needed to break up the long running retro debate, so I figured I'd have a little fun with some people who believe GTO is a all American name, began with a Pontiac midsized coupe, and anything wearing the GTO name needs stacked headlights, a boxy body, or the word "Judge" plastered in big letters on it's rear flanks (it was a slow day at work).

Ferrari was the ORIGINAL GTO. Pontiac simply stole the name to place on a car that pissed most of it's previous fans of the name off. To some degree, seems history repeated itself!

.....still think the Monaro's a good GTO, though (jumps back into the bunker )

I completely reject the new GTO. If it doesn't have Borano wire wheels or a Columbo derived V12.......I just don't know how they can call it a GTO!

The 1984 "288 GTO" was a shortened wheelbase version of the popular 308 with a different tail and different body details, and was arguably the best looking Ferrari ever made:
