Infiniti G coupe and sedan

This is hardly late breaking, but...

Regarding the Infiniti G35 sedan and G37 coupe, many of you are likely aware that the G37 coupe weighs more than the sedan. It turns out that some Infiniti fans are not pleased by this, partly because the coupe is apparently supposed to be faster. Since it weighs more, the only way to accomplish this is to restrict the power of the sedan.

For 2009, the sedan is supposed to become the G37 and get the 7A tranny.

It'll be interesting to see if Infiniti limits the sedan's engine.

The 3.7 is more efficient than the 3.5 due to VVEL, and combined with the 7 speed auto, the G37 sedan should be a formidable competitor in that class next year. Around 320hp and 3600 pounds well equipped.

They already limited the engine in the G coupe back with the G35... supposedly only like 85% throttle is available in 1st gear (torque management!). As far as the sedan goes, I don't know what the restrictions on it were.

The new G37 sedan was announced yesterday (Aug 5).

328hp and a 7-speed auto.

The coupe still has 330.

Hmm. The G37 gained about 85 pounds over the G35 -- I'm guessing partly due to the more complex engine and the new 7 speed auto. EPA figures still improved from 17/24 to 18/26. Interesting that adding weight in the form of a more complex engine and transmission will increase fuel economy. The lightest Infiniti G sedan now weighs 3581 pounds, compared with around 3300 or so when it was introduced back in 2003. With moonroof and all the goodies, I'm guessing it'll be close to 3700.

It's still a lightweight compared with the CTS.

The G37 sedan has a V6 and weighs 3703.
The V6 CTS weighs 3861.

The CTS is also nearly a foot longer

I don't know which spec sheet you're looking at. I'm looking at the specs from the infinitinews.com website. The base G37 sedan is listed as 3581 (compare to base coupe at 3616). Most coupes have been closer to 3700 as tested by the magazines.

The G37 sedan is 187.0 inches long. The CTS is 191.6". If that's "nearly a foot longer", then I'd say we have different definitions of "nearly" . Passenger and cargo volume are nearly a match, so I'd say they're basically the same size in the way the Chrysler 300C and Dodge Charger are basically the same size (the charger is a few inches longer/pointier). The base DI CTS is 3874 pounds. So I see a 300 pound difference. Which makes sense, as a test done by R&T earlier this year with two well-equipped examples of 2008 models had about a 400 pound difference.

The manual transmissioned car weighs over 3600 pounds. But there is clearly something awray. When car mags put these things on a scale, the number's out of whack with where they should be:

Car & Driver (3,703 pounds)
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...take_road_test

Automobile Magazine (3,696 pounds)
http://www.automobilemag.com/am/99/2...6/compare.html

The new G37 gained about 120 pounds over a similarly equpted G35 Sport according to Car & Driver.

By the same standards & same magazine, the Cadillac CTS:

Car & Driver (3,898 pound)
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...cs+page-2.html

Automobile Magazine (3,874)
http://www.automobilemag.com/am/2008...fications.html

Your guess is as good as mine.

Mistakenly used the coupe's 182.2". My bad.

I like the wannabe lux Datsun better. To each, his own, I guess.

Okay, I think I understand part of this. The base weight for the G37 6MT is 3615 pounds, which is more than the automatic. But the 6MT includes the sport package, with larger wheels and bigger brakes. The Car & Driver test car probably has the usual spate of options -- nav, moonroof, etc. The large moonroof on the CTS adds about 100 pounds. I've seen CTS models with the DI V6 come out at over 4000 pounds.

The Automobile numbers are from the manufacturer and are for the base model.

So I think the net of this is that if you take a fully optioned sport package G37 automatic, it's probably going to be 3750 pounds, and a fully optioned CTS DI sport auto will probably be around 4050 pounds.

Base models will be nearly 200 pounds lighter.

I think the difference will be around 300 pounds, if similarly equipped. But it could be as much as 500 or as little as 100, if you try hard enough.
