If brand styling stinks, what about this?

I got an interesting e-mail from a friend of mine who works at Ford. Seems the marketing machine over there is a huge fan of alliteration. The new Windstar will no longer be called Windstar, but "Freestar". Incredibly stupid name aside, you can start to notice a trend here and apparently it isn't coincidence. Most of Ford's future cars' names will begin with an 'F', since 'E' has obviously been given to SUV's. You already have the Ford Focus and now Ford Freestar. In the last couple of years we've seen concepts including the Forty-Nine, 427, and the Freestyle. Ford has been itching to ditch the Taurus name for years now....perhaps for Falcon? The only car that seems safe from this is Mustang, after all you couldn't call it a Ford Firebird, could you?

But wait there's more. Mercury is going the same route, only you guessed it...'M's! Mountaineer, Marauder, (Grand) Marquis, new Monterey, Montego concept....I think you get the idea.

I just thought this was interesting and something I never really realized before now. Thoughts?

Why not call it Fustang?

Just kidding of course. However, Chevy did do the same thing in the 60's.

Chevy:

Corvette
Camaro
Citation
Corvair
Chevelle
Chevette
Cavalier

I've always assumed GM went through phases where they loved the alliteration idea too.

True, but the 'C' in Citation doesn't have the same sound as C in Corvette or Camaro, or Chevelle. Point taken however.

Ah yes,

The T1000
The J2000
The 6000 (Why not A6000?, the platform was the A at the time, right ? (6000, Celebrity, Cutlass Sierra, Skylark))

Corsica, just remembered that one.

Haha, I thought they changed Windstar because a minivan doesn't exactly cut through the wind.

As for the Mustang, they could now call it the Fugly-stang.

That was in their Euro wanna-be period. Chrysler fell prey for it briefly too (the 600), and now Acura and Cadillac have also decided that their cars should not have proper names. This stems from the belief that the marque is more important than the model (they want their owners to say, "I own an Acura" instead of "I own a Legend"), a theory to which I do not subscribe.
