I saw my first Scion today and you cant believe who was driving it!!
About 5 minutes ago as I was taking my dog for a walk and a white Scion xA just happened to drive by my house (what luck) , and guess who was driving it?
A young 20 something male?- NO
A young 20 something female? NO
A 30 something male?- NO
A 30 something female? NO
How about a 40-50 year old balding white dude that was about 50 lbs overweight!!
Wow! that Toyota/Scion marketing department really did their research.

108hp is hard to swallow even for $12k. And no, not surprising that it appeals to older crowd. They're still getting an affordable Toyota.

Pardon my ignorance, but is this Scion I keep hearing of a new Toyota brand, or just vehicle?

well, kinda both.... Its a new vehicle.. there's the A version which is smaller and has curves, and the B version that is slightly longer and is boxy.
Supposidly, when you walk into a Toyota dealership the Scion has its own area, with its a salesperson that stays with you for the whole time, from info to loan to handing over the keys.. the price is fixed.. and they also sell you tidbits it customize the look..

Sounds like it was The Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons!!
I think Scion should add the following to its customized features list:
1. Hair-piece or wig (your choice of length and color)
2. Membership to the gym
3. Contact lenses
4. Gift certificate to Subway
5. A gift card to the "GAP" for some some cool youthful clothing

I saw my first Element on the road the other day and had a similar experience. It was being driven by some ex-hippie, Birkenstock-wearing, middle-aged lesbian. I thought to myself, yup, that's about right. The Element is the new Volvo.
On a more serious note, I think the car companies know full-well that the real target market for these cars is older people. Gen Xers simply don't have enough money. But the companies have to pretend it's intended for young people, and that's what attracts the (older) mainstream buyers. It's like the old saying, you can sell a young man's car to an old man, but not the reverse.

I didn't realize Saturn had something comparable in the works. At least it sounds like they're pushing it towards adults to begin with.
