Hyundai Equus coming July 2010, priced under $60,000

REPORT: Hyundai Equus coming to the States in July 2010, priced under $60,000
According to an anonymous source at Hyundai, buyers in the U.S. will get their first crack at the Hyundai Equus sedan beginning next July, with a cost of entry somewhere south of $60,000.
The Genesis-based sedan, which stretches a little over seven inches longer than Hyundai's first attempt at entry-level luxury, is available in Korea with either the Genesis' 3.8-liter V6 or 4.6-liter V8. However, Stateside buyers will only be able to purchase the bent-eight model when sales begin next summer.
Hyundai's primary aim with the Equus is to compete with the similarly priced Lexus LS460 ($64,700), while offering more luxury amenities including reclining rear seats, massagers and LCD displays. According to Rick Case, the owner of six Hyundai dealerships in North America, "It won't be a volume model for us. It will be a halo car for the brand." If you want to scope out the Korean-market Equus before sales begin next year, 100 sedans are currently available for evaluation at dealerships across the country.
No body is going to buy a $60,000 Hyundai. VW made this mistake with the Phantom.
Is the Genesis even selling that good? I've never seen one on the road, coupe or sedan. I literally seen more Ferrari's and Aston Martins in the last week than Genesis ever.

I hadn't really thought about that until you mentioned it. I haven't come across any Genesis sedans as of yet, and only 2 coupes. I do a pretty good amount of driving all over this area too, so its somewhat surprising.
I have see a Genesis Sedan on the road a few times. I think it is the same one, because I generally see it in the same piece of road. I don't think I have seen a coupe around yet.
But this 60k car... big mistake. It might have some great features, but it shouldn't have been a Hyundai. They should have come out with a 3rd brand that was more upscale.

I've always thought that 'Genesis' would be a decent name for an upscale badge for Hyundai. I personally don't know many people around here that want to buy a luxury Hyundai....mainly because there is no shortage of d-bags in my neck of the woods that have to have a Lexus because 'everyone else' does. Hyundai will learn what VW has learned....too many people stake their sense of identity on what others think.
At $100k you had surely surpassed just about every Audi sedan (and most of the luxury market) in price, and you were still driving a car with a junior nameplate. I don't think they sold the plastic flowers with Phaetons, but I could be wrong.

Hyundai would be making the same mistake if they inserted their car as an equal in the market in terms of pricing.
The difference is they're offering more car than the competition at a lower price point. Now, would-be or almost-buyers of the $60k+ luxury brands have something that's more affordable. The brand-flexible may bend towards the Hyundai, or used luxury buyers can now go new with a Hyundai. The wary may go with Hyundai because of their "Assurance" program. It's a great value proposition...
