Hummer sets H3 price at $29,500; vehicle to hit showrooms in mid-May

General Motors has released pricing details for its new Hummer H3 SUV. The latest Hummer offering will have a base price of $29,500, including a destination charge of $565. Fully loaded models will come in just south of $40,000.

The H3's introductory price includes standard equipment such as full-time, electronic 4wd, OnStar and a 5-speed manual transmission - a first for Hummer. The H3 shares the same basic underpinnings as well as the 3.5-liter, 220-hp, 225-lb-ft inline five cylinder found in GM's Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon mid-size trucks.GM says the H3 will arrive in showrooms beginning in mid-May.

The H3 is the brand's first foray into mid-size SUVs. GM is hoping the vehicle will attract a younger, more diverse crowd, including women -- prompting Hummer to slightly shift its marketing strategy.

Hummer will launch its TV marketing campaign for the vehicle this weekend. It will air a 30-second commercial called "Vertigo" throughout coverage of the NFL draft on ESPN. That same commercial will air on various TV programs throughout the weekend.

Another spot, called "Game Over," can be seen at hummer.com starting Saturday, April 23, part of Hummer's strategy to increase its online advertising. -Automotive News contributed
So it starts at 29,500 and tops off at just under 40g's. Pretty good for a mid-sizer. Despite the weak engine, i think i'd rather have this over any of the explorers, TB', and mid-sized imports on the market today.

They seem to have priced it well, so we'll have to see if it lifts the Hummer brand significantly up sales wise.

Ya, this doesn't sound too unreasonable, when you consider Hummer to be a "premium" or "niche prestiege" brand.

Should be on the radar of a lot of Grand Cherokee type folks.

It is priced very well. I hope the push the I5 as a fuel efficent HUMMER engine. I think it will scare some people away even though the H3 will be faster 0-60 than a 6.0L 325HP H2. DoD 5.3L or 4.8L would be a nice addition to the H3 line up, and make the H3 a good Hemi Jeep fighter.

Yeah. Not in line with Hummers upscale and rather expensive image. 29k is cheap for a Hummer, and perhaps even cheaper if they decide to play the incentive game a couple of months or a year down the line. Imagine picking up a new Hummer for less than the average price of a new car in todays market.

If the rumors of the H4 turn out to be true, than i think Hummer is putting "prestiege" and "premium" on the back-burners. They're becoming more like Land Rover. Not a bad thing sales wise, but you wonder what it'll do to the brands upscale image if one is able to pick up an H4 (if they even make it) for 24k and an H3 for 29k.

I like the H3 though. I don't think they should expand any more, especially towards the little-cute-ute compact market. Any ideas on whether a larger engine will be optional on the H3 anytime soon? 5.3L v8 would be the perfect candidate.

Needs more power. Right now its one of the weakest midsize SUV's on the market as far as power. Will the Vortec I-6 fit????

No, but a V8 will fit.

I don't think it would fit, or else they would have used it i would assume. That I-6 wouldn't fit into the colorado/canyon platform which is what this H3 is based off.

Despite the weak engine, i think projected 0-60's are in the high 8's. Hummer is claiming 8.9. Pretty acceptable. I think the gearing helps a lot.

I'm not sure the Grand Cherokee would be on the radar. It's a mid- to large-sized SUV with more room and power than H3. Different market IMO.

I'd like to see them do a Jeep Wrangler competitor. Right now that's the only thing that's holding up Jeep's "off-road" image. If Hummer could build a better Wrangler, that would really cement Hummer as the ultimate off road truck/SUV.

So what's the technical differences between this and the Colorado platform? I mean in terms of chassis, suspension, drivetrain, and overall capabilities outside of just hummer-ish looks?

My fiancee's step-brother's 04 H2 seems to have almost no practical advantages or on-road difference in feel between it and her dad's 04 Z71 Tahoe LT. Mainly just subjectively nicer looks inside and out. Even their dash and a lot of interior parts seems to be 90% shared between the two.

Some might say that a Hummers H2's 315-profile LT-rated tires would be useful if you did alot of driving in sand dunes. Other than that, I can't honestly think of a purpose for a H2. It's a status symbol. Nothing more.

Showrooms by mid-may? Ive seen at least 5 here in Shreveport, LA. This is where the Colorado/Canyon are made, so I guess the hummer based on the same platform is made here?

I don't consider that a cheap car, since you are lucky if you find a new one for under 35K.
