How much is reasonable for a NEW car??

Granted, people's annual income plays a lot into this...

But for me..... $20,000-$23,000.. With a couple options. I'm not really pickey. I don't need XM, Onstar, Heated seats, leather. Just a CD radio with a good sound system with a manual tranny. I *H*A*T*E* autos!

As long as it looks nice and has pickup. My father's 06 or 07 Silverado, stripped down w/ a V6 has NO power unless you wind it out.

Sure, the Solstice. You can even opt for the Solstice GXP which starts a tad under $26,000.

You left a broad range of vehicles.

The traditional rule of thumb on how much one can afford (or the amount that is considered reasonable to spend) is 6 months salary.

$40K a year = $20K car. Sure many spend more than this, but at the expense of other things like savings.

Are you asking what's "reasonable" from the pont of view of what is appropriate based for a person based on that person's financial status of from the pont of view of what is appropriate for the fifty generation Camaro given its primary market target?

That is why the 1-2year old used car was invented

I guess I was being to abscure.

In GENERAL.. What is you opinion of a reasonable price range for ANY new car? Granted, some like luxury vehicles.

I mean for an Average Vehicle. Be it a Solstice, Equinox, Solera (sp?), Eclipse....etc...

I revise my price... $19k-$23k

Well, I understand your question better but I have no idea how to really answer it.

Costing out a vehicle is one of the more difficult things a manufacturer has to do and they have to take into account many different variables...it's also one the jobs they have to do very well or fail - no matter how good a manufacturere's engineering may be or how exciting its models may be, if it doesn't truly understand what each vehicle costs to produce and can sell enough to cover that cost and make a profit then they will not survive long-term.

Every vehicle model/variation of that model has its own set of costs that have to be considered and of course, the manufacturere has to sell enough of them at enough of a profit to make it worthwhile to bring a particular vehicle to market at all.

All that to say...you can look at the cheapest Kia and then look at the cheapest Chevy and decide if the price of either or both are "reasonable" for you but whether the price is "reasonable" for the buying puclic at large is almost impossible to answer.

How much is reasonable for a house?

I'm failing to see the point to this thread. It's a bit too "abscure."

Good question.

My parents home (1966) costs, if memory serves, about $25K to build...it was over 3,500 Sq Ft., had beautiful hardwood floors through the whole house, extra large two car garage and sat on about an acre of land and was built buy American craftsmen and is a sloid today as it was when it was built...my house, bought in 2003 costs $114K, is made of matchsticks and balsa wood, has extra cheap carpet, is about 1,400 Sq. Ft., sits on 1/3 of an acre and was built by illegal Mexicans...who do you think got the better deal???

I'm afraid this entire thread has become "to abscure" . . . Sorry.

"Matchsticks and balsa wood..."

Nice, Robert.

Gotta consider inflation, though. What is $25k in 1966 equal to in 2006 dollars. 40 years of inflation...

Hell, what could your parents' house be sold for today? If it is now a $300k house, it isn't really fair to compare it to your $114k house

Housing prices are too relative to location to be placed in a car thread since an auto is pretty much generic to the entire country.

In Mississippi, the further away from crime you live, the cheaper the house...

A few months ago, the local paper had one of their advatorial writeups of the Honda Accord. Interestingly, the price listed was $29,990 and they didn't bat an eye.

So, I'd guess the upper-end of the 'sweet spot' for bread-n-butter midsized cars is now around $30K.

So . . . that would entail a move out-of-state?
