Holden Vehicles
Re: Holden Vehicles
You can bring one into the US and keep it for personal use for a period of 12 months. After this time, you are required to either ship it back or destroy it.
During these 12 months, you can do whatever work is required to bring it into US regs. You can then petition Customs, NHTSA and EPA and whoever else to keep the car here. I'm not sure if you have to send it back then re-ship it or if you can do this while the car is here & still within it's 12 month waiver. You'll also have to pay a duty (tax) in addition to whatever tax you'll pay in Australia. Be prepared to leave the car with government agencies for a long period of time.
The EPA part is very easy. Australian emissions laws are every bit as strict as they are here, and the drivetrains are sourced from here in the US. Also, the Aussies have a far more strict noise standard than even the most strict local ordanence here, so at least that part is a breeze.
The GTO has already passed front crash testing and it's identical to all Holden's full sized cars, so that another hurdle. You'll be able to "special order" a Commodore with left drive (Middle East configuration) and GTO exhaust and engine management (same chassis configuration & wheelbase), so that's another thing in your favor.
In short, it's do-able, and it probally isn't going to be too difficult as far as the car itself is concerned. But the headache factor is going to be pretty high when it comes to our end.
There are also auto import companies here in California that will do all this for you.
If you're serious, do your homework 1st.
