GTO markup, (already a legend or dealer greed?)

I have yet to see a GTO on the road around seattle here and I finally saw one on the net for $45k. I emailed the seller asking him why the $10k mark up and heres the response I received:

"Although the GTO is a limited production vehicle and almost by definition a collectors item the second sticker markup is somewhat negotiable. You will find that any specialty vehicle of this type with limited production will be priced at a premium due to the law of supply and demand. Please call anytime for more detail.

Do dealers have ability to price the cars at whatever they want or are they controlled at all by the manufacturer? People like me who could just maybe afford one have no chance, heck for $45k, might as well get a vette or a CTS-V if yo need 4 seats.

Just noticed it has been taken of autotrader.com, so maybe the markup didn't hinder the sale and the dealer made a massive profit.

The manufacturer has no control over dealer markups. The Pontiac dealers down here aint doing it though. Although I havent seen one yet, both local dealers have em on the lot (one has 3, the other has 8 (!!!)), neither are selling them for over sticker.

Dealer Greed, pure and simple. That 2nd dealer markup must be about $11K over the $1 "collectors peice mark up"

Sad thing is, somebody with money is going to believe it and waste an extra $11K that could have went towards toilet paper or something else more constructive than charity to a car dealer...

Yeah, they're discounting them here, not much, but something like $500 off sticker.

There's one dealer here in Tampa notorius for marking up special editions and the GTO I saw that they had included a markup of $4K. They once had a new 2000 WS6 convertible selling for $41K.

But another local Pontiac dealer has no markup on their GTO whatsoever.

I hate dealers.

By law, the manufacturers cannot set or enforce a retail price. That's why it's called a "Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price".

As I've said before, I have no problem with dealers asking for additional markups. No one here complains when they take $5k off the sticker of a Silverado, so why should we complain when they try to make that up on a vehicle in shorter supply? If you think that's an unfair price, you have the option of not buying it and looking elsewhere. Capitalism is a great thing, but you have to remember it works both ways.

I think they are selling at MSRP near me.

One dealer tried to sell a 2002 WS6 for $3k over MSRP I hope no one bought it because they would be taking a HUGE depreciation hit.

I dunno how anyone can pay a dime over msrp, or even invoice for that matter, just give it a few and you will see them for invoice minus rebates.

on newagegto.com, there are several people that got there GTO's for around 30k with GMS. Im sure with time, and with 05's on there way, the 04's will drop its price, but it wont do much after that. I dont think there will be a massive depreciation like on the fbody or mustangs.

Very well put. What other industry does the consumer know what the retailer's profit is? You wouldn't imagine going to a grocery store or a clothing store and bargaining with the salesperson. I know the grocery margins are thin, but clothes have an unreal markup. If you don't like the price of the car, don't buy it. Plain and simple. If the dealer can sell them for $10k over MSRP, more power to him. When he has 2 or 3 04 GTO's on the lot when the 05's come in, are you gonna pay MSRP because that's what the sticker says? No, you're gonna want a discount.

Some people do try to bargin or haggle in consumer electronics. It is really funny when they haggle on the cheap as $hit stuff we loose money on from the get go. But I do know some things are price controlled like Sony XBR. How do they get around that?

Here in the Detroit area, they are giving GMS on them no problem. Before they wanted sticker price. There is one dealer that recently advertised a GMS price of $29,800 and claimed to have 50 in stock ready for delivery!

Like others have said, shop around and buy the car from somewhere else and have it shipped then for a better price.
