GTO exhaust picture
When I went to the LA show, I mentioned that the GTO had duals exiting from the same side (not a single exhaust).
Here's a complete picture of GTO's dual exhaust system. It's actually less restrictive than the F-body's single exhaust system (don't think the irony of single exhaust Z28 owners complaining about the dual exhaust GTO's "single" exhaust is lost here
)
Also note, it has resonatators not mufflers. Should sound really sweet!

Looks like it also has full sized cat converters plus "pup" cats up near the manifolds, like the pre-02 Z06s had.
Seems like that would be unnecessary since the F-body never had pups and the Vette got rid of the ones it had.
I'm just happy to see a true dual exhaust on a non-Vette GM product again. I would love to see what an X-pipe would do for the HP.

.....the "bolt-in" IRS assy......hmmm the street rodder in me is thinking about re-tro fitment.....interesting geometry back there too....
Front suspension arms look small......and curious geometry there too...
Also the car should be fairly easy to design sub-frame connectors for......
Nice to see the underbody fairings to cover the gas tank, etc....and even one in front of the oil pan....
Headers should be OK too!....Tail pipes look tiny!
Funny little cross-over near the back....
315's might not fit in back.....gggrrrrr...
Rear steer rack & pinion...hhhmmmmm.....
Jacking points seem to be 1/2 way under the doors....lifting entire side at a time...?!?
Just my little observations......

I believe there are new emission standards comming that require instant converter startups, meaning everyone's catalytic converters will be mounted as close to the manifolds as possible.

Well it isn't the fact that the exhaust is true duals that dissapoints many its the fact that the GTO doesn't have the pipes on sperates on either side of the car. It was important enough a look for the F-body that they branched off a dual exit exhaust tip to make the car more agressive. Now here is a car with true duals and they exit on the same side... the Grand Prix's exhaust looks better...
Typical GM 2 steps forward (sometimes) 1 step back (always)

Better to sound the part, than continue the poser-dual look we've lived with for all these years. Besides, when the GTO arrives, hopefully the only ones who will be in position to debate the rear styling be the losers (at the track, on the street...).
All kidding aside though, I thought it just wasn't feasible to add true duals to the current design in the time for 2004 release? Moving the gas tank, which I thought sounded easy, was apparently a major issue leaving little room for the dream exhaust setup (Which the Monaro, unfortunately, didn't have anyway).
I almost forgot something that might intrest those of you wanting duals on each side of the car.
HSV (which will have parts available here almost from GTO's introduction) has a rear bumper designed for just that set-up. There is a lot of space back there now that the fuel tank's been moved.
Seem like it would be easy to change, but I kind of like the idea of whipping other cars with what seems to be a single twin tip exhaust system.

OH NO! Too late! I said it!
They NEED the tailpipes on both sides and they NEED to do it before the car comes out.
