No, its not a Camaro concept.

Its a special edition they are building using a couple dozen still new 2002s that have been sitting in their back lot for a couple years. Expensive...

 

The "concept" was designed by Kris Horton just before the public showing of the actual car. The cars themselves were Z28’s with serious body modifications and engine upgrades. This is a collector’s item and not related to anything upcoming from GM directly.

 

Actually I don't believe Kris had anything to do with this. It's actually based on a one-off GM concept that debuted at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit in August 2002, the Sunoco Camaro.

 

If I remember correctly Kris posted here once that he was given specs right after the retro infamous concept to design the car based on certain criteria.

I live less than 30 minutes from that shop. I should go visit sometime. I have seen one of those guys from there show up at a local cruise night in a twin turbo Z06 Vette WOW!

 

He mentions it in that post, and he has a picture of it on his site, but he never said anything about being involved in the design process. The way GM operates (and any other automaker for that matter) I highly doubt they commissioned a guy off the street to design a concept car for them.

 

I think there's a bit too much Kris Horton worshipping on this site. He didn't design that car...

 

I think everybody is throwing around the term "concept" a bit too loosely here.

Concepts denote some harbinger of future offerings. None of these cars were anything of the sort. The Sunoco car was a "show car" and was commemorative of F-body racing heritage and the Woodward Boulevard cruising tradition in Detriot. It was not conceptual of anything.

The Dick Harrell Supercar was likewise a special edition, tuner car based off of that show car. It was not a concept either.

This is how newbies come here and get confused about the Sunoco being a 5th gen concept,because everybody's throwing around the "concept" word all ***** nilly.

 

Yup, as has already been said, the Dick Harrell edition is is just that, a special edition that GMMG cooked up. Think Saleen Mustangs...

The body panels are based on the Sunaco/Woodward car. In fact, because the Sunaco car was strictly a one off hand built job, GMMG had to use it for reference in order to mock up their own prototype body panels which reportedly Chevy was quite helpful with.

One of the car rags had a quick page or two on it; Super Chevy or one of the like...

I saw the Sunaco car on the Power Tour in '03. Absolutely stunning...wish I had $100 large to drop on a Dick Harrell...

 

Kris did mention it somewhere… I just can’t find it.. it might have been at C&G or some of the other forums but I distinctly remember him working on that vehicle and that is why it is on his website. The car has nothing to do with GM although they were aware of the car. There was a thread here with the pictures of the Z-28’s all sitting in a frozen car lot with snow sitting on each one.

As for whether Kris designed the car.. take a look.. it is easily recognizable as his work but if you don't agree that is fine let’s hope he stops by and can comment on how far he was involved in the design process.

Just to clarify, I meant that he was involved in the design of the 3D car not the actual vehicle. I was just going over the post and realized I wasn’t that clear. Kris designed the 3D model and the car was unveiled at a show. The 3D design was then simultaneously uploaded on the main site for the dealership. (i.e. he was told or shown what the car would look like and he had to render it in 3D)

 

Kris was commissioned to create a 3D model by GMMG per their specs... just like he will do for anyone who wants one provided they have the $$$. Check out the latest Hot Rod, there's an article on artists who will create model "sketches" for a fee. Kris is one that is mentioned.

Hold on, are you saying the Sunoco Camaro had nothing to do with GM??? TRUST me, the car was a one-off done by GM to show and drive at the 2002 Woodward Dream Cruise. It has GM Performance Parts stickers on it....where's Kris to clear this one up? #1) no one had ever heard of Kris Horton in 2002, that was well before his infamous 3D retro 5th Gen concept and #2) again I don't think GM pulls people off the street to design show cars. It just doesn't happen.

Kris may have helped GMMG render their car, but the ORIGINAL concept (Sunoco Camaro) was ALL Chevrolet. I'd put money on it.

 

I believe he was referring to the Dick Harrell Special Edition tribute cars. While approved by GM, it was purely a venture by GMMG and Berger Chevrolet.
