GM spent $5 million on its auto show party

WTF?

i just saw this on CNBC's north america international autoshow coverage.

seriously? $5 million on a press event? they claimed this $5 million was for just the party outside in the football field sized tent, not the stuff going on inside the convention center.

Think of all the free media the auto manufacturers get during auto show season ... cheap compared to TV commercials.

I have seen coverage of GM style on five websites, CNBC, FOX and Headline news. I think its money well spent. My wife will be watching some E! gossip show and they'll be interviewing a star infront of a GM car.

Just the press alone and the buzz in the media like being on CNBC was worth $5 million. That's a drop in the bucket for GM's advertising budget. They will spend more on TV ads at this years Super Bowl and won't generate the buzz like they got from this show.

Remember the GM of the 80's under Bob Smith and their stogdy image. Could you see past GM VP's dancing while Kid Rock is playing..... Bob Lutz was cutting a rug!
GM knows that a lot of the reason Cadillac is cool again is the image. And to keep that going for all the brands they need to invade pop culture a bit more.
