As a consumer... I like it when the cars are cheaper.

Good for me.

Just out of curiosity... how many people who don't like the rebates have said "oh, no thanks" when they go buy a new vehicle?

I'm gonna guess none.

Some of the best sales ever come right after the company goes out of business too...

Yugos were DIRT cheap once the announcement was made they would stop imorting them and close all the dealerships.

Seriously, I was one of the first to denounce the GM plan to offer employee pricing to everyone last year, and I will be the first to jump up and say that big rebates are NOT the answer right now either. This does nothing but make the buying public think that GM cars are "discount" material, instead of "top-quality that demands a premium".

Bad move.

I don't see the story here. They said all along that incentives would still be around and used where appropriate/useful, even with the lower prices.

It isn't like they are going back to the huge $4k and $5k rebates, at least based on what I saw in the article. Much smaller, targeted only at certain vehicles and brands. In fact, I thought I read that some of the discounts would apply only to vehicles that have been on the dealer's lots for 125 days or more.

I want to see them ween off of rebates as much as anyone, but I don't think this is all that big of a deal.

GM needs better advertising. Perhaps they should hire the same firm that promoted the iPod.

Hmm, so $500 to $1,500 on 05's and early production 06's. Think you guys may be making mt. Everest out of the ant hill in the back yard. When they start offering 4-5k off on current model year cars, trucks and suv's, then indeed be worried. Hell, even Honda and Toyota have sales events.

No big deal. I wish I got more off my Cobalt which was excluded from employee pricing. With incentives, more people will be inclined to spend more on a vehicle or buy one at all. I'd say as long as the rebates are kept $1500 and below, or at year end sales $2000 on certain models, thats perfect. This is totally fine. Selling a lot vehicles is better than selling less or none at all.

That's kinda my feeling too. When I read that article yesterday I thought, "here we go again", but it does seem a bit different this time. Then again, the article states GM's incentives were still second highest in the industry at $3200, so we may not be seeing the entire story here.

Don't you all get your undies in a bundle. It's not a big deal, just a promotion. Remember when we had those???

exactly, Why would i want to pay more for the same thing I can get cheaper.
Although I think new car prices are absurd to begin with when they cost 1/3 the price of a house
