GM to rename Venture and Montana minivans
By K.C. CRAIN | Automotive News
DETROIT - General Motors will rename the Chevrolet Venture and Pontiac Montana, part of a plan to drop the minivans' soccer-mom image.
In the 2005 model year, the Venture will become the Uplander and the Montana will be called the Montana SV6.
Also, Saturn and Buick will get minivans for the 2005 model year off GM's minivan platform. The new products will be called the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza.
GM says all four minivans will look more like SUVs. The automaker does not call them minivans. Its name: crossover sport vans.
The vehicles will be several inches taller than the current minivans. They will retain the minivan's trademark, sliding doors.
All four vans will be built at the Doraville assembly plant, which assembles the Venture and Montana, in suburban Atlanta.

I think the Montana rename is a typo and should be "SV6" and not "Montana SV6". That makes more sense anyways.
Oh, and they're not minivans anymore...

Anyway, it is actually "Montana SV6"... I have read it on a few sites...
not sure what they gain by adding "SV6" to it... I think it is supposed to stand for "Sport Van 6-cylinder" or something incredibly exciting like that...

EDIT: So much for my "Montana name doing well" suggestion. Looks like YTD sales of Venture are twice Montana and it's out the door. Anyways, as an FYI for 2003 YTD sales:
1. Dodge Caravan...151,331
2. Honda Odyssey...93,981
3. Chrysler Town&Country...80,344
7. Chevy Venture...51,831
11. Pontiac Montana...24,191

Sorry for the dupe. Only thing I can think with "Montana SV6" is that the Montana name is doing well enough that they don't want to completely toss it away, while at the same time steering us towards a more alphanumeric nomenclature for the Pontiac lineup.

I agree about the alphanumeric tie in theory.
