GM getting closer with Solstice and performance SUVs

Mark Reuss said GM will display high-performance variants of their popular SUVs (TrailBlazer, Envoy, Bravada, upcoming Ranier) at the SEMA show in November with the possibility of quickly phasing them into production via GMPD if there is interest.

This year's SEMA lineup is said to focus on trucks and entry-level vehicles with four-cylinder engines in hopes of attracting the attention of the import tuner market. "We want to get performance into the small car for GM," Reuss said.

As far as making progress on a Solstice rwd architecture, "It's not done, but it's well in process," he said. "We've got a pretty good formula."

Reuss also stated that it may not be necessary to include several vehicles in order to create an economical rwd architecture. "GM is studying ways to produce small-volume specialty vehicles like the Solstice profitably on dedicated architectures."

If it can work for the Solstice, can it work for a new Camaro?

Man I hope so!!

I kinda like the Solstice. I don't think I would buy one, but I bet it would be fun to drive. I think it's supposed to be Miata-like. Miata's are fun to drive in a go-kart way. Handle well and have to keep it up in the rev band to go fast. I don't like having to keep a car reved up to have power. I like it when if you need it down low, it's there.

Cool! Wonder if they're thinking about the TT 4.2L AWD Trailblazer....if I HAD to buy an SUV---I'd want a fast one.

Hopefully for the Solistice they would supercharge a production version---other wise a NA eco-tec wouldn't really be bringing small car performance to GM

FWIW, GM displays several dozen pie-in-the-sky concepts every SEMA show. I've been going for 10 years and that's always the case. In that regard, I don't think anything will be any different this year (i.e. lots of concepts, but typically nothing for production). The last time GM put something into production that came out of a SEMA show was the Chevy Extreme S-10, which made it to market sans its turbocharged engine. Prior to that, there was the Impala SS concept in 1993.

The Solstice is actually a pretty neat car (I saw it in person and sat in it). Under the current regime, I think it would be unwise to see a turbo or blower on Solstice for one reason: that's the only excuse GM would need to jack the price way up. I firmly believe GM does "get" performance. What they don't "get" is the concept of "affordable." I've said it before and I'll say it again, if GM execs and program managers had to buy "regular" GM cars and pay full price for them (like we do), the face of performance at GM would be far different than it is right now.
