Was GM ahead of its time with financable performance parts?

discovered that back in 89 GM offered a special SLP Performance Parts Kit that included: headers, catback, intake runners, and a new PROM (CAI was optional and extra). it was said to be worth 50 hp and picked up a full second in both 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times. these could be financed into the purchase price of the car and installed by the dealer or by the customer.

info can be found here: http://www.transamgta.com/Webmaster/SLPkit.html

seems GM was on to something and then stopped

They didnt really stop, people just didnt buy into it. I know of only 2 SLP optioned 89 TA's. In 91 and 92, SLP made the Firehawk, which did a lot more to the Bird then what was done in 02. And if you think about it, SLP's hand into Fbody production lasted from 89 to 02. They had some sort of performance package up to its last day. SLP has been making parts for the Fbody since 87 I belive. GM didnt just stop because... SLP made the famous Firehawk Firebirds, WS6 Trans Am's, and SS Camaros. SLP Eng. still makes special packages for GM cars.

i was never aware of any other package that could be added to the car price and wouldnt void the warranty like the one i posted for 4th gens tho. if there is id like to see it so i can continue to learn, also ASC did the WS6's and such on the 4th gens. SLP did the SS and firehawk.

That doesn't sound right. You have a link to back that up?

Im willing to bet it wasnt advertised/clearly availible in the brochure. I would definetly buy that package from the factory if I knew it was availibe and could be bought on financing. Not to mention save myself the headache of doing it myself.

110% correct...ASC did do the RA hood for '98+ WS6s. SLP lost the bid for the WS6 hood, but won it for the SS hood, and did supply the hood to Chevy from '98 to '02...

So the WS6 '98+ was ASC, the Hawk was always SLP, and the SS was SLP only if you ordered the extra SS options. A base SS '98+ NEVER hit SLP the way the LT1 cars did...Chevy did the work in-house, then sent it down the street to SLP if you wanted anything from the SS grille to Bilstein to Auburn...

I love LS1 SS owners who think their cars came from SLP...when I ask to see their SLP window sticker, they act like I'm an idiot for asking...if it doesn't have 2 stickers, it isn't an SLP touched car...
