german manufacturers need help too
Sorry if this is a repost--didn't see anything on the subject after a quick search.

Silly Germans, so out of touch with what the public wants. They've been building over-engineered garbage for years now and here they want their government to bail them out.
Seems like there might be more to this "perfect storm" of a global recession than some might like to admit. BMW and MBenz are darlings of the automotive press--I wonder why cars without cheesy interior plastic trim aren't selling in droves?
Could it be a GLOBAL RECESSION?
Now I wonder if the Germs are smart enough NOT to let the lifeblood of their economy fail? 1 in 7 has ties to autos in Germany...could be trouble if Opel goes down and takes suppliers with them--that hurts BMW, Benz, and the rest.
/Sorry if this post comes off as a rant or too sarcastic. I'm just all worked up over the total disregard of well being for hard working folks all over America.
I'd rather go down swinging and let the General burn through 25 billion trying to survive than throw in the towel and hand the keys over to China.

So much for American pride in our products.
Hmmm, Japan, the world's #2 economy, is now in a recession as well. How bad do things have to get before Honda, Toyota, and Nissan need help as well?
Let the big three go under, consumer confidence goes through the basement, we teeter on the edge of a depression...
And then we get to find out what happens when the unstoppable force of our Japanese automakers meets the immovable object of global financial disaster.

I know, right? This whole global financial crisis has everybody FREAKING OUT. GM is really in trouble. There are some others out there that are as well. But certainly there is some media "the sky is falling" hype out there as well. Let's hope that's really all it is.
The German government is considering bailing out Opel (GM).

BERLIN/FRANKFURT, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Germany said on Monday it was ready to help General Motors (nyse: GM - news - people )' struggling German unit Opel, though it would make sure any aid did not seep over to the U.S. parent or trigger a flood of demands for support.
Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to meet Opel representatives at 1530 GMT on Monday. Opel has asked the federal government and German states to help it through a financial rough patch that has been aggravated by troubles at its parent GM.
