Unreal! Why wasn't this thought of before?
Doing away with the spark plug presents many opportunities to increased efficiency.
But the prospect of overcoming initial start up issues regarding bio fuels sounds promising.

As much stress that spark plugs go through and as dirty as it gets in the combustion chamber, I really don't see how this will work. How can you ensure that carbon won't build up on the laser so that it will stay at full strength? It will also have to be cheap or provide a good performance increase.

Cheap, I don't know about. I'm sure as the technology progresses, it will get cheaper. Performance-wise, this could be great. As the article said, replacing the spark plug will allow the use of larger valves, and they can use the laser to relay information about what's going on inside the engine to allow better control over the air/fuel ratio.

You know, I have one simple request.
And that is to have Mustangs with frickin' laser beams attached to their engines!!
Now apparently seawolf06 informs me that can't be done.
Now what do we have? Spark Plugs?? Do they have quad yttrium-enhanced electrodes? That may be a start.
