Ford GT's Top Speed: 205 MPH

At an advertized 550hp, that car's horsepower is seriously underrated.

For comparison, LS2 Corvettes run 186 (current Z06s run just over 180), Vipers 193.

For those of you still transfixed on 60s era horsepower numbers, that's roughly 700 gross horsepower... if you believe that 550 number.

Coletti said a long time ago the car would drive at 180 mph comfortably. This guy is saying 200 mph was uneventful! Sounds like they did a good job.

too bad GM isn't into the underrating business as of late. but i'm not here to bash. that GT is awesome, i even have a poster of it on my wall now, along with the sunoco (thats a nice one redplanet)(not a production car). and the chicayne and a 69 camaro. why don't i have a modern chevy poster who knows? maybe something thats actually intesting will come out, maybe not, maybe i have to go ford.

Why do you think it is grossly underrated? I mean besides the fact that the 03/04 Cobra's are?

Is the top speed gear or aerodynamically limited (I'd guess the latter since that is what limits most high end cars).

Consider the Ferrari 575M. 515HP and top speed of 202mph.

Rounding out the comparison, the Carrera GT is rated at 612HP and hits 205mph.

Unfortunately the peak ratings do not tell us much, we need to know the power at which the car stops accelerating due to drag.

Even if it was eventful, I would imagine he wouldn't mention it, seeing as how he works for Ford and all

STILL, very cool to see a domestic hit the 200+ club.

LOL, at 200 mph an "event" would be a bad thing!

If I recall correctly, the topspeed of the big-block GT40 race car was somewhere around 220 mph. Those guys had big ones to drive a car that had front end lift at those speeds.

Current C5 Z06's run around 170-175mph for max velocity due to the higher 0.30 Cd and aero trickery for high speed stability.

it is a mistake though to assume the coefficient of drag is equal among a Viper, Vette and GT. I'd assume the GT has the lowest and the Viper the highest in that group.

Aero has a huge impact at 200mph...small aero effects can equal the effect of 50-100hp very easily in the 200mph range.

I am not doubting the GT is somewhat underrated, but perhaps not to extent GuionM suggests.

Yep. Aero refinements are much more efficient in extending top speed over 200 MPH.

yes, I would hope that my trip to 200+mph is as uneventful.

Think I'll rephrase it then.

Either the GT' power is underrated or it has some very good aerodynamics.

The Viper weighs 3365, the GT is 30 pounds more, yet the difference in horsepower is only 50. But the GT outruns the Viper by over 10 mph. A figure that all things being equal should equate to closer to a 75 to 100 horsepower advantage instead of just 50.

If there's more to it then this, let me know. I'm not an engineer, but I'm a fairly quick study.
