Ford F Series Plant Evacuated In Michigan

Here's a scoop. Fords F Series plant here in Michigan has been evacuated due to an explosion (and continous explosions) at a treatment facility here in Michigan. The explosions are happening in Romulus, with huge drums exploding nearly ever other minute.

One has to wonder how this will harm F Series production.

General Motors has also evactuated a powertrain plant in the area. If I remember right, the Performance engines (such as z06, etc) may be produced near by these explosions, although I am not 100% certain on that.

At anyrate, these fires are causing all sorts of headaches for Ford and General Motors.

The fire was not AT the Ford plant...
It was at E.Q. Resource Recovery Inc, a chemical recovery and recycling facility.

In fact, if this thread is referring to the plant in Wayne Michigan, they are closed this week for tooling change-over anyways. My latest production report shows Wayne plant down for week 8/8/05 with an estimated unit production loss of 3900 units.

Plant closings
Plant-------------------------Week(s)--------------Units lost
---------------------------------down--------------per week
DaimlerChrysler
Warren Truck (Warren, Mich.)-----8/8-----------------4,350
Ford
Atlanta--------------------------8/8------------------4,350
Michigan Truck (Wayne, Mich.)----8/8------------------3,900
St. Louis-------------------------8/8--------------------†
St. Thomas, Ontario--------------8/8-------------------4,225
GM
Lansing Craft Centre
(Lansing, Mich.)------------------8/8-------------------150
Total Units lost week of -------8/8------------------16,975
†Vacation

But even if they were running production, there are typically a few weeks of vehicles in a distribution piepline anyways. The interruption itself will probably go unnoticed by anyone except plant staff. When a plant is not running overtime, multiple shifts, or weekends, they can opt to run the extra shifts to make up for lost production if the demand is present. Given that we are at the year-end of model production right now - I doubt they would need the extra 05's in the pipeline anyways.

FYI: Z06 Engines are built in Wixom.

No word yet on a cause. You can get info on it HERE . The odd thing is, that plant is only 4 or 5 miles away from my house and I didn't hear a thing. My house was quiet, too, because I was lucky enough to have one of the 24 houses in my neighborhood to not have power yesterday (not related to explosion).

As for the Ford plants, there are two right next to each other. Wayne Assembly and Michigan Truck. I'd imagine they would evacuate them both. If I'm not mistaken, Wayne Assembly still builds the Focus.

C6 Z06 < LS7 > engines are built in Wixom, previous LS1-2-6- motors are a St. Catherines build.

There is a GM Powertrain plant in Romulus. They built 1,211,019 engines there in '04.

Just thought I'd chime in here with a picture that I got of this fire from my local paper:
